Church of Spies

I just bought "Church of Spies: The Pope"s Secret War Against Hitler" by Mark Riebling, has anyone here read it before? It seems like it's going to be a pretty good read with great attention to detail in regards to source material. Seems like almost a 3rd of the book is sources although I could be exaggerating a little.

Jewish Week in their review of the book (quoted in the book) states that Riebling shows that Pius XII plotted to assassinate Hitler. I knew Pius XII attempted to exorcise Hitler, but I did not think he was part of any assassination attempts. Anyway, looks like it's going to be a good read. Just wondering if anyone else has read it and would recommend it.

I haven't read it, but sounds like it should raise the question whether the Pope should be at war with anyone, even Hitler. I'm also skeptical about histories that seem apologetic. Is the author a historian? Just curious.

The removal of Hitler even by his death would certainly be just but the morality of Tyrannicide aside, Pius XII's actions and deeds before and during the war could hardly be seen as pro-nazi. I don't find it to be apologetic, not yet anyway, it even seems to be a bit harsh at times against Pius XII at times. The author seems to specialize in historical intelligence gathering.

His prior book I believe was used by Congress or federal gov in its investigation of 9/11 security failures. Working off of memory I may not have it completely correct.

What i like about the book is that in between transcripts of audio recordings, facts and data there is the human element. The subjects have character, the good and bad, worts and all.

In a way it reminds of World War Z, which combined fictional data and the human element to tell a story. In a way the author here does the same but his data is real world.

Cool, I read a lot of history from that era. I used to be more interested in the German side but have gotten more interested in the Russian side. I hope to do more reading on the Germans. I read a really good biography of 4 renaissance men, it was fascinating to see the Popes as political actors. It's unfortunate Stalin was able to use the Russian Orthodox Church to mobilize patriotism during WW2. I'm not a fan of religion and politics meddling, which is why I hope Catholics don't get forced into defending Pius XII just because of a black legend. The truth will emerge, probably murkier than both sides want it to be.
