I saw another link to this a couple of weeks and sent it to a Cistercian friend, as her habit was featured. She said they got the symbolism wrong. The book says Cistercians wear white for purity, but she says their original habits were a kind of creamy colour simply because that was the colour of undyed material, which was the cheapest.
