Anomaly
I've been told that the first Thanksgiving on the North American Continent was actually in St Augustine, included the Mass, and of course, was in Spainish. It included the local natives, and lots of food. The US is unique in that it has actually legislated a day to specificity thank God as a National Holiday. IgnatiusofLoyola
I'm planning to pretend that Thanksgiving is just another day. With family 2,000 miles away and my health preventing me from flying, along complete lack of "in person" friends (no exaggeration-zero.), and having to restrict my diet due to diabetes and other health concerns, if I treat the day like any other, I won't feel (as) lonely. My mother will call me. My sister might call me, but she's mad at me right now (she's pretty much always mad at me for one thing or another), so she will probably start yelling at me. I plan to rehearse what I will say so that I don't yell back (or cry), up to and including hanging up. I'm still alive, my cat adores me, and I have a roof over my head, so that will suffice for this year's "celebration."

little2add
The Thanksgiving of the Heart ”Our good ancestors were wise, even in their mirth. We have a standing proof of this in the season they chose for the celebration of our annual festival, the Thanksgiving. The funeral-faced month of November is thus made to wear a garland of joy... There is a deep moral influence in these periodical seasons of rejoicing, in which a whole community participate. They bring out, and together, as it were, the best sympathies of our nature. The rich contemplate the enjoyments of the poor with complacency, and the poor regard the entertainments of the rich without envy, because all are privileged to be happy in their own way.” - Sarah Josepha Buell Hale
