Michael Voris?

I don't care for him. He's very much an "us versus them" type, and if you disagree with anything he says (specifically, his opinion) you're a "them."

Thoughts? Ran into some of his videos recently.

As a former fan and intern, I can say Michael has a very strong appeal. He is smart, talented, sure of his cause, and he offers answers and solutions, which all of us look for in the confusion of the Church today. I can certainly see why many follow him.

However, if you are interested in reading it, I wrote about my experiences working for him last year and outlined my objections to his methods. I walked in an ardent supporter of his, and walked out very disappointed in his shady methods and selective reporting of the news: http://onthemattersofpapistry.blogspot.com/2016/09/from-vorisite-to-barronite-why-i-left.html

People hate him or love him. Just like Mark Shea, and most who like one don't like the other. Voris is a right of centered Catholic, the Shea is a left of centered Catholic.

I think Shea is more of a jack hole, but he often gets a pass where as Voris does not. For example there are plenty of Voris dislike threads on PM, not as many for Shea.

Does anyone on Phatmass even listen to Shea? I mean, aren't most Phatmassers more traditional than the average Catholic, making them less likely to like him in the first place?

Shea isn't exactly a liberal.

I'm friends with him on Facebook and I read his stuff. We've even had a few private exchanges. I definitely don't like everything he's said as of late, but I've noticed a lot of faithful Catholics get very nasty and uncharitable due to this election.

What's worse, there was the huge rupture that happened as the result of Pope Francis' election. Many people I know broke friendships because they had opposing views on him. The reactionary mania by prominent trads concerning Pope Francis has alienated most Catholics, whereas the near worship of him by some has alienated the trads. It's just a really sad situation all around.

I don't know if it's a cultural thing, but in the UK it doesn't seem common for Catholics (I'm talking about orthodox practising Catholics here) to listen to podcasts or watch videos like this, no matter what the politics of the commentator. People will go to a talk hosted by their local Carmelite spirituality group, or they'll subscribe to a mailing list for Bible study or lectio divina, or they'll browse through the latest books in the repository after Mass, but there are no huge Catholic media personalities over here who get everyone talking. As a result I find it difficult to relate to either the hype or the hostility around Voris or Shea.

I've always found myself more drawn to consecrated religious.  I like to listen to talks from Mother Assumpta Long, Sr. Joseph Andrew Bogdanowich, Mother Angelica, Fr. Groeschel, etc.

I get bored with Voris and Shea and that other blogger that was fired by the National Catholic Register, I already forgot her name...

No need for insults. Simcha's blog has certainly been discussed to death here. It's ok not to like Voris, Shea, Fisher, etc. As for the OP, I'm not a fan of Voris. I've just never really liked his style. The videos I've seen seem angry, for lack of a better word in my tired state. I realize that I am often negative in things, too, so pot, meet kettle. Something I need to work on.

I used to appreciate Voris, but after a while (didn't take long) all his whining and complaining got stale. I don't know why (nor care) he spends so much energy pointing out how so-and-so ain't doing Catholic this or Catholic that right. I always thought he was condescending, which probably appealed to me at first b/c the things he was pointing out made me feel like I was doing Catholic right. Then I recognized that was my pride, which put a new light on my view of Voris' work. I have moved on. I no longer care and don't want to hear his (or anyone else's) stories of "bad Catholics".  One does not become virtuous by comparison.

Regarding the OP question,

Voris' videos suggests a belief that the Church is on the brink of total destruction, and that if it wasn’t for the work of Michael Voris then the good that is happening (seemingly very little) would also be destroyed. Not only does this run contrary to the promise of Christ that He would never abandon His Church, but it also suggests a belief that without the work of Michael Voris the Church would be lost.

At the end of the day Michael Voris’ videos reek of a spirit of despair and negativity, and they regularly lack authentic Christian charity; the kind that can speak into error without insults or character assassinations of the human persons involved – persons who are willed and loved by God.

The overwhelming sense that someone is likely to take away from Michael Voris’ videos is that the Church has largely fallen into the hands of Satan; she has all but been abandoned by Christ, her Bridegroom; and that there are probably only one or two bishops alive who are actually still faithful to Christ.

The one thing that I find lacking from a lot of Michael Voris videos is the actual truth and beauty of Christ and the Catholic faith, and a living witness to hope in Christ Jesus – and at the end of the day, that’s probably the most troubling thing of all.
