Released Emails Show Clinton Allies Plotting a 'Catholic Spring'

Ashley Rae Goldenberg | October 12, 2016 9:12am ET

A newly released email exchange shows Hillary Clinton campaign chairman John Podesta and Voices for Progress president Sandy Newman discussing an “opening for a Catholic spring” to move the religion away from “a Middle Ages dictatorship.”

In the conversation released by WikiLeaks as part of the “Podesta leaks,” Newman wrote an email to Podesta titled, “Re: opening for a Catholic Spring? just musing . . .”.

In his email, Newman writes he believes “There needs to be a Catholic Spring, in which Catholics themselves demand the end of a middle ages dictatorship”:

This whole controversy with the bishops opposing contraceptive coverage even though 98% of Catholic women (and their conjugal partners) have used contraception has me thinking . . . There needs to be a Catholic Spring, in which Catholics themselves demand the end of a middle ages dictatorship and the beginning of a little democracy and respect for gender equality in the Catholic church. Is contraceptive coverage an issue around which that could happen. The Bishops will undoubtedly continue the fight. Does the Catholic Hospital Association support of the Administration's new policy, together with "the 98%" create an opportunity?

Newman admits that his perspective, however, may be based on a “total lack of understanding of the Catholic church,” but he is still curious how to “’plant the seeds of the revolution’”:

Of course, this idea may just reveal my total lack of understanding of the Catholic church, the economic power it can bring to bear against nuns and priests who count on it for their maintenance, etc. Even if the idea isn't crazy, I don't qualify to be involved and I have not thought at all about how one would "plant the seeds of the revolution," or who would plant them.

Podesta confirms he believes Catholics in Alliance for the Common Good and Catholics United were created to “organize for a moment like this”:

We created Catholics in Alliance for the Common Good to organize for a moment like this. But I think it lacks the leadership to do so now. Likewise Catholics United.

Podesta also agreed with the concept of a “Spring movement” suggested contacting other people to move it along:

Like most Spring movements, I think this one will have to be bottom up. I'll discuss with Tara. Kathleen Kennedy Townsend is the other person to consult.

Catholics in Alliance for the Common Good claims to be an organization dedicated to inclusiveness and promoting the “social justice mission of Pope Francis and the Catholic Church.” It has been criticized for its Progressive views on social issues.

Another set of released emails reveals Podesta and Clinton allies mocking Catholics for their faith. One of the emails shows Clinton campaign communications director Jennifer Palmieri saying people become Catholic because it is considered “the most socially acceptable politically conservative religion.”

An excerpt of this opinion piece in the Wall Street Journal:

http://www.wsj.com/articles/non-catholics-for-church-reform-1476400609

"Mr. Podesta endorses the suggestion and even assures him that organizations bearing the name “Catholic” (but, of course, unapproved by the church and outside its authority) have been created. He claims that the “Catholic Spring” Mr. Newman has called for is already being planned, though it’s not quite ready for execution:

“We created Catholics in Alliance for the Common Good to organize for a moment like this. But I think it lacks the leadership to do so now. Likewise Catholics United. Like most Spring movements, I think this one will have to be bottom up.” Mr. Podesta and his associates had already set up and funded the front groups to foment the rebellion that they hoped would whip the Catholic Church into line.

Speaking to a trusted colleague, Mr. Podesta felt no need to hide the fact that these groups are political operations constructed to masquerade as organizations devoted to the Catholic faith. He and his allies created them to subvert the church’s teachings and witness—produce the rebellion—not advance them. The groups are progressive and Democrat—not Catholic.

Where do you suppose Mr. Podesta and his friends went to get the money to fund the phony “Catholic” groups? The Catholic League for Civil and Religious Rights discovered, to no one’s surprised, that the effort was backed by progressive billionaire George Soros, another non-Catholic.

The bigotry on display in the emails is that of people who claim to perceive bigotry everywhere, even where it does not exist. Some on the left have perfected the technique of smearing their political opponents by dismissing dissent from the dogmas of secular progressive ideology—on, say, abortion or marriage—as bigotry. This tactic has only bred more hatred toward traditions of faith that uphold traditional moral values, such as Catholicism, evangelical Protestantism, Eastern Orthodoxy, Mormonism and Orthodox Judaism."

Traditional Morals should not get in the way of Women's Healthcare and Government Subsidized Healthcare for the Poor.    That is unChristian.  It is about a women's right and helping the poor.  We aren't advocating for forced abortions.   Abortion cannot be outlawed. It's been around for years in Europe and you don't see goon squads arresting pregnant women and forcing abortions.  (#PartyofTolerance/Democrats)

Scary.

Hating Catholics is still socially acceptable in America, and it looks like it's going to get worse before it gets better.

Oh but this isn't hate, this is helping Catholics escape from their backward paternalistic anti-woman beliefs that aren't *really* a part of true Catholicism

from an article written by Archbishop Chaput, after he was visited by a faux Democrat organization disguised as "Catholics."

Quote

Back in 2008, in the weeks leading up to the Obama-McCain presidential election, two young men visited me in Denver. They were from Catholics United, a group describing itself as committed to social justice issues. They voiced great concern at the manipulative skill of Catholic agents for the Republican Party. And they hoped my brother bishops and I would resist identifying the Church with single-issue and partisan (read: abortion) politics.

See, this is exactly what I've been talking about.  How EASILY it was for Democrats to convince Catholics that Abortion shouldn't be the main issue and spinning it so people feel guilty about being one-issue voters.  (I've never felt guilty about it, if you have saints like Teresa of Calcutta and JPII stating it is the only issue that matters, that's good enough for me!)

Catholics are so easily brainwashed by the liberal propagandists it's very alarming.  The faux Democrat organizations pretending to be Catholics have done a pretty good job...

I wonder do they feel this way about the Protestants?

There are so many different Protestant churches, each doing their own thing, that there can be no claim to a consistent Protestant theology or dogma. Some Protestant churches even deny the divinity of Christ, or say that it doesn't matter if the Resurrection is only a story. As it stands now, if someone disagrees with a tenet of a particular Protestant group they can simply move church, especially as there isn't the same sense of continuity in Protestantism as there is in Catholicism - no emphasis on the primacy of Peter, the unbroken chain right back to that upper room in Jerusalem. So it wouldn't make much sense for any politicians to try and get a Protestant church to change. They've already changed. But just shopping around for a different brand isn't an option for Catholics. Interestingly, I think the authors of these emails have underestimated the faith of the Catholic public - while it's true that many Catholics do go against the Church, many of those very same people wouldn't want the Church to change. It sounds paradoxical, but I've met more than a few Catholics like this.

I also think that the authors are confused by the Catholic political map. From what I've seen, Catholics are much more likely than, say, evangelical Protestants to take political positions that are labelled as 'progressive' when it comes to things like the death penalty, war, the question of homelessness, and so on. This is why so many of us find ourselves in a pickle when election time comes round, because there isn't anyone who truly represents us, and we can never vote with a whole heart and think, "Yes, I support this 100%." These authors seem to have been blindsided by the idea of people who agree with them on some things but disagree on other crucial things, and instead of considering that they might be wrong on those matters, the immediate assumption is that we are wrong.

Subject: Call on Mrs. Clinton to Apologize for Anti-Catholic Bigots in Her Campaign and to Fire Them

CONTACT YOUR PRIESTS, SENATORS, AND MEMBER OF CONGRESS AND ASK THEM

TO CALL ON MRS. CLINTON TO APOLOGIZE FOR ANTI-CATHOLIC

BIGOTS IN HER CAMPAIGN AND TO FIRE THEM

October 14, 2016

Fellow Pro-Lifer,

By now you may have heard of the shocking emails sent by political operatives affiliated with the Hillary Clinton campaign that demean, denounce, and hold in contempt the Catholic Church and Catholic teachings.

The emails, which were never meant to see the light of day, but have been revealed by Wikileaks, feature remarks about the Church made five years ago by –

John Podesta, the man now running Hillary Clinton’s presidential campaign,

Jennifer Palmieri, the communications director for the Clinton campaign, and

John Halpin, a longtime official with the Center for American Progress, a pro-abortion “progressive think tank” founded by Mr. Podesta.

All are deeply connected to Hillary Clinton’s presidential campaign and all hold in contempt Catholics who adhere to the Church’s teaching on abortion and contraception.

In one email, Mr. Podesta admits that he and others “created” the liberal groups Catholics United and Catholics in Alliance for the Common Good in order to undermine Catholic teaching.

In another email, Mr. Halpin writes that socially conservative Catholics “must be attracted to the systematic thought and severely backwards gender relations” he says are in the Church.  He called those whom he labels as “conservative” (one may assume this includes pro-lifers) as adhering to a “bastardization of the faith.”

In response, Ms. Palmieri declares that prominent Catholic converts only join the Church because “they think it is the most socially acceptable politically conservative religion.”

To say that these individuals, all of whom in positions of influence in or around the Clinton campaign, have disdain for the Church’s teaching on the sanctity of human life is an understatement.  To say that they disrespect people like you and me who believe what the Church has taught for millennia is to state the obvious.

And these bigots could soon be setting and implementing government policy.

That’s why I’m asking you not only to call on Hillary Clinton to fire Mr. Podesta and Ms. Palmieri and distance herself from Mr. Halpin and the Center for American Progress, but also to urge your priests, your Senators, and your Member of Congress to do the same.

Discrimination against Catholics was once prevalent in the United States.  It is becoming so once again.  We cannot allow it to spread.

Please call your priests, Senators, and Congressman or Congresswoman.  Ask them to denounce anti-Catholic bigotry and to demand that Mrs. Clinton separate herself from those who hold traditional Catholics in contempt.

We have already lived through one attack after another on the Church by government officials.  We do not need to suffer any more anti-Catholic regulations or policies put in place by those who seek to undermine Catholic teaching.

Please click here for further instructions on how to take action.

And please forward this email to anyone you know who may be interested in taking action as well.

Sincerely,

Fr. Frank Pavone

Thanks for this. It might seem small, but it reminded me to keep an eternal perspective (and a sense of humor) in the midst of all of this drama and not lose myself in anger and frustration.

During a frustrating argument with a Roman Catholic cardinal, Napoleon Bonaparte supposedly burst out: “Your eminence, are you not aware that I have the power to destroy the Catholic Church?” The cardinal, the anecdote goes, responded ruefully: “Your majesty, we, the Catholic clergy, have done our best to destroy the church for the last 1,800 years. We have not succeeded, and neither will you.”

Here's another good op-ed on this topic:

"HEY CATHOLICS, THIS IS WHAT TEAM HILLARY REALLY THINKS OF YOU"

And an excellent piece from Archbishop Chaput:

"About Those Unthinking, Backward Catholics . . ."

In the last debate, when asked about SCOTUS nominations, Hillary said that she would pick those committed to preserving Roe v. Wade and same-sex "marriage" (without a word, of course, about upholding the Constitution).

And let's not forget, in a speech last year, she declared that religious beliefs opposed to abortion "have to be changed."

If the Cackling Witch is elected President and nominates SCOTUS justices and federal judges, neither the pro-life movement nor religious liberty have any future in this country.  Catholics need to think seriously about this before voting (or deciding not to vote).  This is a far more serious issue than Trump's lewd remarks.

And yet we have "Catholic" clowns like Mark Shea insisting that pro-life Catholics must support her.  If Catholics support the witch, sadly, we'll get exactly what we deserve.

We're not doing something right when the majority of U.S. Catholics support vehemently pro-abortion politicians anyway.

But the Left wants to eliminate all opposition.  They are Satanic.

(Just noticed Dominicansoul already posted the Chaput article.)
