Another veiling thread

I assume you're asking if any of us veil outside mass as an expression of modesty.  Since I don't live in a culture where veiling is an expression of modesty, I don't and would not.  Here, it would communicate that you're a Muslim, which is not the message I'm trying to send.

I think hair is more eroticized in the Arab world than it is here.  Here, it's more the body that is sexualized.   I think for a Western woman, being conscious of what she wants to communicate with her makeup and dress is more on point than covering her hair.

in church, yes.  But outside of church? - I've done it if I've been in a procession that originated in a church, or which had the Blessed Sacrament.

But other than that no.  I've worn on a scarf on my head when I'm cold and don't have a toque, but to me that's no the same thing.

No. For me that would take away the meaning of wearing a veil to pray in the Real Presence. In cultures where headscarves aren't a regular part of dress I think it would just draw unnecessary attention to you and possibly mislead people into thinking you're a religious sister.

I forgot to take my veil off and went to a grocery store after mass once.  That's probably the only time I veiled outside of church.  :smile3:

I've walked home wearing my headscarf before, though I usually take it off as soon as I get outside. But nothing other than that. I've a friend who veils all the time, though.

I do not veil in Church as it would indeed most likely draw unnecessary attention.  I don't think anyone would think I was a religious sister of any kind, rather just trying to draw attention to myself.   It is always impossible to know what others think or might think, but common sense does provide potential possibilities.  "Common sense is the guide of all the virtues" (St Albert, Ancient Rule of Carmel).

If other started to wear veils, then I would follow suit - and just be one of those who are wearing veils........common sense then telling me that the possibility of others thinking I was trying to draw attention to myself would be unlikely, not impossible - just unlikely. :)

I think wearing a nice lace mantilla in a Catholic Church at any time is a beautiful custom with powerful motivations as potentials.

I used to wear a cross on a leather thong, but when my SD commented (very nicely) that I looked like a religious sister, I abandoned it.  I now wear a small sterling silver cross on light weight sterling silver chain.  My previous priest religious SD (also a theologian) said that if anyone asked if I was a religious to simply state I was a type of religious sister.  I never used that term:

  "Are you a religious sister?"

"No".
