Catcalling?

If you don't mind my asking, are you a habited religious? Do people still catcall you if you're in habit?

That's good advice; I'll try to do that more often :)

I don't mind at all! I do wear a sort of habit (white or grey shirt and a black skirt, with a medal). As I don't yet wear a veil, most people don't pick up that I'm a sister. I notice that when I'm with my sisters people are usually more curious than anything else, because it's not often you see a habited religious in public. I have been in situations where my sisters have received attention from men, and which could be considered catcalling, but in those times we have just moved away. I do think it's easier to do that when you're in a group or with another person though.

Mostly, I ignore it, but mostly because I'm frightened. However, if there's close to me a security staff, a soldier, or a policeman, I alert them. Seriously, there's nothing more reassuring than when a man who is 6,5 feet and fully armed tells you "We're going to handdle this, mademoiselle, he's not going to do it again." with a very very angry voice.

I've got pepper spray (which is actually supposed to be more effective from what I've heard).

Trying to look at you?

I've never met a person with a tolerance to a taser. Can't say the same for pepper spray.

People have a tolerance for pepper spray?

Why are we tasing and pepper spraying people exactly?

What were you wearing?

It's actually your fault, really. J/K

Yep.  You can build up a tolerance.

I desperately hope no one will be pepper sprayed. I doubt it'll ever come to that. Therefore, "why" someone is getting pepper sprayed will hopefully not be answered by myself.

As to why I have pepper spray, on the other hand...

I have a friend who has lived in a smaller city than I do and has used her pepper spray merely to dissuade a couple creeps from continuing to follow/harass her. She has never actually sprayed it, but only showed them that she had it and told them to leave her alone. It worked.

My mom heard her story and got me a thing of pepper spray. I'll admit, I do feel a bit safer when it's within reach. Not because I think I'll use it, but because if I did need to use it, it'd be there.

Why else would someone carry something like that, if not for legitimate self defense? jw

I don't know why they call it catcalling.  Cats don't listen at all.

Self defence, unless you believe allowing perpetrators to have their way with innocent people is the saintly thing to do?

Dang... It's sad that this happens. People have lost the ability to respect others. I think that this is symptomatic of how depraved much of our society is--- these kinds of behavior are ingrained in some guys because they have killed their conscience. They've built  habits of thinking of women as objects to the point that they will just say things like that or worse. The way to fight against these kinds of things is to make these perpetrators, for lack of a better word, begin to realize to what level they have fallen. Ignoring is probably best in these situations… but saying something to shock some sense into people could be necessary sometimes---provided it befits us as Christians and if it's safe to do so.

This is what catcalling should look like:

raw

That's cool. I did not mean to suggest that there is an equivalence, FWIW. But still, I dunno if I can see M. Teresa or any of our other saints responding in that manner. Seems like there should be a better way, although I can't say exactly what it would be.

I respect your opinion though. I haven't been in your shoes.

St. Nicholas punched Arius in the face. Just saying.
