I've read that as well.  People on both sides tend not to cite sources, which is probably why there are misconceptions and no satisfying resolution.

I was also of this misconception.  I thought this movement was some sort of offshoot.  The fact they were ex-communicated complicated it.  By the fruit of FSSP, is how I knew.  Their is alot of fruit growing.

The SSPX find themselves in a strange sort of canonical limbo. Irregular is a good way to put it, but it is an inexact term. In fact it is an accurate way to describe the situation because it is inexact.
