An unique carmel in Belgium

Found that, wanted to share.

What is the Boussu Carmel ? It's a carmel located in Belgium, but made of Vietnamese nuns. These VIetnamese nuns were in fact living in what is now Cambodia, and who was in that time a French colony. The Phnom Penh carmel was persecuted in 1975, by the Cambodian communist dictator Pol Pot (his policy killed more than 20% for Cambodians). They had to left because, as Vietnamese, they were "foreigners". . At that time, a part of the sisters went to Belgium, and met with the Boussu Carmelite. The sisters were faithfull, but aged and without vocations. After various discussions, they left the Carmel, and the whole Phnom Penh Carmel moved to Belgium. They are supported by Vietnamese priest, and are a very important place for the many vietnamese people in Belgium and France. They have some vocations. I am fascinated by these contemplative nuns who were two times migrants.

Nada - Something similar happened in the US, in the city of Mobile (in the state of Alabama, which is in the deep South, not a heavily Catholic area, although the city was originally founded by French explorers). I don't know anything about these Vietnamese sisters being persecuted. Here's the story, taken from the sisters' web site, followed by the link to the web site. (And for those of you who knew about the American sisters leaving this monastery and turning it over to the Vietnamese sisters, you might be happy to know that the American sisters are back in their monastery with the Vietnamese sisters.)

"CARMEL CONTINUES IN MOBILE----On March 16, 2010 the four remaining Carmelite's had to leave their monastery due to old age.  Now they live with the Sisters of Mercy of the Americas in their retirement community at the Convent of Mercy in West Mobile, Alabama.  We are happy to announce that all four of the retired nuns have now returned to the monastery.

On February 20, 2011 eight brave young nuns from the Carmelite Monastery in Nah Trang, Vietnam arrived in Mobile.  They volunteered to come to Mobile to continue the life prayer and sacrifice that the Carmelites have given to the Archdiocese of Mobile since four nuns arrived in Mobile from Philadelphia in 1943.

In an effort to support themselves by the work of their hands the Sisters are making vestments for Priests, Rosaries, and beautiful greeting cards.

A book is now available at the Visitation Gift Shop, The Portier House Gift Shop, and at the Monastery telling the story of the Carmelite Monastery from the foundation in 1943 to the renewal in 2011.  It is written by a well know Mobile author and very dear friend of Carmel, Mrs. Anna Bailey Crow.  If you would like to order any of the things the nuns are making just fill in the contact us information and we will be in touch with you."

There is one Carmelite Monastery in France with Vietnamese sisters.  They sought refuge in France during the war.

This is a Quebec Carmel, but it looks like they were in France for three years before going to the Chicoutimi diocese.
