Sacred Art School

The archdiocese of Oklahoma City had an artist priest. He did an entire gallery, and the mural in our parish. Forget his name now. He's been dead a few years. Seems like they were associated with some school but I can't remember right now. Too tired. Took care of an 18 month old today and I don't remember the score, but I'm pretty sure she won.

We have some amesome murals in my Church. More churches need that kind of stuff. I would love to be a Church artist if I could draw

I've been listening to the Catholic Creatives podcast lately and it's become so apparent to me how desperately the Church needs to "invest" in good art, be it financially or prayerfully or through preaching or whatever. We can't afford to keep settling for horrible art and design. I found this school and love that it exists. We need more like it.

One of met biggest laments is having my conversion from barely catechized Catholicism after I graduated from university. I may have taken a different route in my Art studies had I the knowledge and fervor for the Faith I have now. All those slides and papers about mid to late 20th century movements took a toll on my art psyche.

I've always thought about attending a place that offered Sacred Art, but they appear to be rare. It seems like one can easily find schools and programs dedicated to Sacred Music but when it comes to visual arts the only place I know of is the one posted in the OP and a bunch of others that offer theory but no practice, or short term courses/seminars.

Exactly! I wish I knew about this place a year ago-- I might've tried to beef up my portfolio and apply, and who knows, maybe I'd have gone there instead of where I'm going now? But God has a plan. Maybe He'll get me there someday- who knows?

There's a Sacred Art Institute on the East Coast that's also doing some great work. Have you ever heard of it before? It's on Enders Island in Mystic, CT. It's quite a beautiful setting!

No, I haven't heard of it! It seems like they focus more on the iconography/illumination/calligraphy side of sacred art, though. The appeal of the one in Florence (besides, y'know, Florence) for me is that it's a focus more on sculpture and painting. Either way, I'm so glad these places exist!

Welcome to Phatmass, by the way!
