Mateo,

Welcome to Phatmass!

Thanks for the scripture. I guess it does refer to Christ as our friend, if conditionally. I guess I was focusing on the "chummy" aspect of the phrase "best friend". Interesting to note that not only is the "friendship' conditional on our works, but also He contrasts it with slavery.

peace...

As a Catholic, the idea of being in friendship with Our Lord is quite normal; but when I hear it phrased as above ("...my best friend"), it just sounds like "Barney the Purple Dinosaur" theology.  That's just me, though.

God bless you, Mateo. :rolling:

I see I'm not the only one that feels this way. I don't care for Barney Theology, either. I want my faith to be sacred... kna' what I mean?

For some reason "personal relationship with Jesus and as my best friend and Lord and Savior" and all that I really cannot relate to. To me this kind of friendlyspeak Christianity is just way too saccharin sweet and I just can't swallow it, making me wonder if something's wrong with me.

I guess being raised Catholic in the way I was, it's foreign to me.

Well what Skuba Steve said would be true, if Santa Claus was a bishop...

...wait, he was! (St. Nicholas)

Actually, it's probably a result of differing terminology. Catholics use terms like "interior life" or "spiritual life" to essentially describe the same thing as "relationship with Jesus".

There is a personal aspect an a communal aspect.
