Link to thread query

Could a link to a thread ever become inoperative?  Or does the link remain operative for the life of the internet?

(By "operative" I mean will the link always (for the life of the internet i.e. ad infinitum) link to the thread, even if the thread is locked and disappears into the archives or wherever).

 

I am a true computer dummy - all I do know has been learnt by asking questions!
