Unlike other continents, Africa is recording increases in vocations. To sustain the presence of sisters in schools, hospitals, social and pastoral welfare programs, supporting their education will be a strategy to increase their competencies to continue managing Catholic institutions. A huge challenge for many congregations is not in the recruiting of new members but in supporting and sustaining the large number of entrants.

The goal of ASEC is to contribute significantly to increased access to education in Africa by helping to educate women religious and enabling them to acquire necessary credentials for teaching, healthcare, spiritual or social service ministries in their countries. Over 4,500 sisters have benefited from ASEC’s programs since 2007. To date, ASEC Alumna have raised over $10M in grants for their communities and program participants serve 26,784,100 individuals annually.

They have various programs :
* The goal of SLDI is to develop a multi-track educational program for African Sisters that will cultivate competencies to administer projects and programs that address the human suffering that exist among the people they serve more effectively

*HESA seeks to ensure access to quality, affordable higher education leading to a bachelor’s degree in a needed and relevant professional field for sisters in select African countries.

*According to the Tanzania Catholic Association of Sisters (TCAS) there are 11,000 women religious serving in Tanzania, in 95 congregations. Over 4,000 entered religious congregations having only completed primary education and then spent time in initial formation and in ministry before starting secondary education. Approximately 60% of sisters lack secondary education, and many are beyond school age.

Specific recommendations were made to meet the needs of the sisters. ASEC, therefore, committed to supporting the Bigwa Sisters Secondary School in order to help provide secondary education for several hundred sisters. The Bigwa Secondary School is located in Morogoro, Tanzania and is sponsored by the TCAS. (I posted something about it a few weeks ago)
