music and discernment

Hi!

One sometime here that the most nobale study of music is the study of liturgical music. In the latin tradition this would be eg. gregorian chant or organ music used in the liturgy. If this would be true then all musicians should study gregorian chant. 
All of you Catholic musicians on this phorum, how do you view this? I am aware that this might be viewed as a strange question but let me explain.
We have all kinds of music today from rural blues, jazz, chopin to...and so on. It would seem that gregorian chant is the most noble of all of the music we have. So if you were studying boogie woogie you would be studying juke joint music instead of noble liturgical music. On the other hand you have to accept that you are not a person who should study noble music. Maybe you should study boogie woogie and never play the organ in a church. You could of course study spirituals if you wanted religious music but they are not liturgical. 

How did you catholic musician on this phorum find you musical vocation? Did you ever think of churfch music or did you just play the blues without even thinking about it or did you become an organist? How did your discernment look like?

My musical vocation is a simple story. My grandmother is our Parish organist. When she had to play funerals and Masses and other things, I had to go with her since she was babysitting me. When she took me to children's choir practice, without fully understanding it, I knew I wanted to join. That desire never changed and I joined for 5 years. Now I sing in our young adult choir and our Schola. I never get tired of it. It's a big part of my life.
