How to celebrate the final profession of a sibling?

My sister will be making her final profession as a Sister of Life next month. We're little behind with the planning for celebrating it with family and her friends when she comes for her home visit a week after the profession. Now, I don't know how to go about celebrating these kinds of things. What goes on at a party for a professed religious? What kind of gifts do people  give? Music in the background? Entertainment? Is it cool to have a slideshow of pictures of her life from childhood to present day? What should the general atmosphere be like for the party--- it will be an afternoon at a local hall my family and I have rented. The sisters have sent out invitations for the final profession, should we send out invitations for the party here? Word-of-mouth? Who should we invite or not?

yeah I think a little reception with music in the background and a slideshow sounds nice :) maybe you could also host a drive of baby products to send her home with that could be used in their pregnancy centers? Ask each person to bring an item?

This is a great question!  My family went through the same thing before our final profession last October.  I am sure that each congregation is different, but based on my experience, these are my suggestions:

- Bring food items for the community, then all of her Sisters can share the joy

- Entertainment or a program is always part of our celebrations, so you can prepare a song, have a slideshow with music, or something funny

- Invitations are good, that will help you with planning

- Collecting items for the apostolate of the community is a great idea, some of our guests donated items for our retreat center

- Have prayer cards printed with her favorite saint or image of our Blessed Mother personalized for her final profession, we both did this and loved it.  This is a great and inexpensive place to order them - http://www.printeryhouse.org/ImprintingExplain.asp

Overall the atmosphere at ours is joyful, fun, and colorful - we had decorations on the walls and tables, a gift table with a basket for cards, a cake with our names on it, punch, other snack food items, etc.

Feel free to message me if you have any other questions, and congratulations!

On the day of the profession, my family and I will order and have some food catered, from a nearby restaurant, for the reception with the Sisters, and the other families.

One of our cousins play the violin and is willing to perform a song. And I have to find out if anyone else would like to do anything. Another relative performs Indian classical dance, would this be appropriate for our home celebration?

That is a great idea… I should probably talk to one of the sisters to arrange this…

I am making a card as well… there's a thread about it in Open Mic.

Hmm. Danielle Rose has good music that would work. Look up her songs See You in the Eucharist and Be God's

Audrey Assad is also a classic choice for a Catholic event :) She just released a beautiful CD of hymns and her CD "Fortunate Fall" is also wonderful.

In regards to cultural dance, that would be beautiful. Our congregation is international, so music, food, cand dance come with all celebrations.
