Philippe
i usually wear jeans (nice jeans that dont go bellow my butt) and then on Sunday i wore a short sleeved collored white shirt... not all short sleeved shirts are immodest are they?
voiciblanche
I try to stay away from short sleeved shirts that only go about two or three inches below the shoulder. My short sleeved shirts generally go no shorter than two inches above my elbow. But I doubt there's a boy's short sleeved shirt that goes only an inch or so past the shoulder and would therefore be immodest, Philippe. If there is, stay away from them. Lol. Thomas Michael
Finally, it kills me, I mean KILLS me when I go to a wedding and the Bride wears a sleeveless, spaghetti strap, or strapless dress.
Bless your heart. Sometimes I feel like I'm the ONLY person who feels this way. I don't mind the brides wearing sleeveless wedding gowns as long as they're modest enough. But the strapless and spaghetti-strap styles are totally inappropriate for a church wedding, if you ask me. I went to Mass at Good Shepherd in Colleyville a few weeks ago... I couldn't believe my eyes. It seemed like 25% of the congregation was wearing flip-flops. Most were not even the fancy kinds you'd find at Nordstrom... nope, I must've seen dozens of the cheap rubber-and-plastic flip-flops in different bright colors. On top of that, there were about three women there in strapless dresses, and countless more in spaghetti straps. If I was in charge of enforcing the dress code, I'd buy a load of white one-size-fits-all cassocks and require anyone who is dressed inappropriately to wear one throughout the Mass. And the hot weather is no excuse... I've spent my whole life in Texas, and the heat here is indeed relentless. But my mother would never let me attend Mass in ANY kind of sandals or shorts. Nowadays, I'll wear nice knee-length khaki shorts once in a while to church... but ALWAYS with a dress shirt, socks and shoes. If you're gonna wear a low-cut sundress, take a light sweater or short-sleeve shirt to put on once you're in the church. It's that simple. Here's a simple rhyme to use: You're not at Mass to show off your bod, so dress modestly and show some respect for God.

Thomas Michael
The fancy flip-flops that otherwise look like dress sandals - with crystals on black leather straps, for example - those would be OK for women to wear. I'm talking about the cheap rubber-and-plastic flip-flops that may be in orange, hot pink, bright green or shaped like SpongeBob... those shouldn't be worn by ANYBODY to church. You can do way better than that. And I personally wouldn't be opposed to men wearing nice-looking sandals (like Birkenstocks) to church. Still that's something I personally would never wear to Mass. People shouldn't wear the flip-flops they'd wear in a communal shower to Mass. God bless, Jen
Mary's Knight, La
couple of things here and they center around 1 main point: We are our brother's keeper good points for talks to youth groups also ;-) they came from a talk given to a youth group in my area. 1. the rags v/s tux argument while we may be so lucky that our clothing does not affect our state of mind to the point that it leads us to personal irreverance, if our clothing causes another to sin by judging us IT ISN'T JUST THIER PROBLEM IT'S OURS TOO sorry to use all caps but i think it's something to remember 2. and this one is for my sisters in Christ, the first battle in the war against temptation for guys occurs at the senses. unintentionally you could be helping your brother in Christ to lose the war for his soul, if you dress to do that intentionally... there are warnings in the bible about that. Iacobus
I need cloths. LOL! My mum has stopped me before leaving the house for Mass in pants and a nice shirt and made me change. So I am not really able to dress up. I always dress Modest and dress up best I can for Easter and Christmas and big days like that. But my only less than white button up and tie cloths are my work short and my tanish shorts I wear with that. It would just look tactky to wear that to Mass but I may, or see if I get a discount at the course on clothes. I think I do. But my real delema is I have no (bar work) middle dress shirts. I have a pair of dockers but am scared to wear them. Last time I wore them to Church (Confession) and genuflacted I heard a loud "rip." So I need new pants for Mass. Unless I can find the rest of my toogles. So would it be wrong for a priest (I am not sure if he still is alive) to say Mass in sandles? We had one like that in Elizabeth. Some of the priests I see say Mass in running shoes. Is that okay? I am just wondering your opoins.
homeschoolmom
IMHO dress modestly = yes. Dress up = not necessarly.
EcceNovaFacioOmni
Iacobus, I attended a Jesuit Mass in which the celebrant wore Nike-style sandals under his normal dress. And... I usually wear a Santa suit to Mass. Hey I know it sounds crazy, but I think Santa is a sharp looking guy and I don't think you can go wrong by copying him. jasJis
Lots of priest only wear sandals and will say mass in them. It's real common with Franciscans. Fr. John of Lifeteen only wears sandals whether it's hot or cold. I don't know what he wears if he goes up north. I personally don't mind shorts or sandals on guys. (I've worn dress shorts to Church on a few occasions). It's okay for teens here in Florida, but I do draw the line at ratty clothes. Also, a Saturday evening or Sunday evening mass is much more casual than Sunday morning. I can't imagine people wearing shorts to the 9:15 High Mass, but I haven't been in years, so I don't really know.

voiciblanche
isnt that wat Jesus wore?
I wear my "Jesus sandals" everywhere except for school, where I'm not allowed to. But I wear them to Mass because they're nice sandals, not flip-flops, and because it's an act of suffering. You develop blisters when you wear sandals every day. So, for me, it's a big suffering thing, and I don't have a problem wearing them to Mass. Edited June 22, 2004 by voiciblanche
Iacobus
"Jesus sandals"
You have those too? Mine are thongs (flip flops) and are pretty nice. I don't wear them to work or Mass but I do wear them everywhere else. My friends call them my "Jesus sandles" because I have had them for 2 years and they are very simple and are not a huge walking ad for nike or addais.
