Guest
The eye is set in a triangle (symbol of The Blessed Trinity) and the one eye, to me, represents Divine Providence (One God - Three Persons: Father, Son & Spirit) always watching over us........and this is pretty much the Christian understanding I think. Eye of horus is different (as below): The left eye represents horus while the right represents ra (in Egyptian mythology). In the Christian image, the essential (for the Egyptian horus or ra) markings below the eye are absent. I am sure research might reveal more. I have done only a rudimental searched for all info posted. horus ra horus Quote http://www.wakingtimes.com/2014/08/11/seeing-eye-sacred-origins-hijacked-symbol/ (no idea how reliable this site actually is) "A possible first known use of the all-seeing eye symbol in Judeo-Christianity is the so-called “Jesus tomb” from 1st century AD discovered in 1980, which uses a similar symbol over the entrance to the tomb. Regardless of whose tomb it is, could this be a first known or early use of the eye-pyramid symbol in the Judeo-Christian tradition? In Christianity, the all-seeing eye or “Eye of Providence” or “Eye of God” has been used as a symbol from at least the 16th century as seen in the following painting below which depicts a scene from Luke 24: 13-32 where after his resurrection, Jesus has supper with two disciples." Maggyie
It's a common, historic part of sacred art. see this link: http://www.religionfacts.com/eye-of-god "The eyes of the Lord are on the righteous." ~ Psalms 34:15 "The eyes of the Lord are in every place." ~ Proverbs 15:
Archaeology cat
That's not an eye of Horus and saying otherwise offends me as an Egyptologist.
HisChildForever
You can give the person the information provided here, but it has been my experience that people who associate the Catholic Church with paganism or conspiracies are nearly impossible to reason with or educate. Luigi
Ask him what he was doing in a Catholic church in the first place! Then threaten to report him to his Anti-Catholic Protestant minister - "Eddie was sneaking into Catholic churches! He must be thinking about converting!" The rest of his anti-Catholic Protestant congregation will take of him more effectively than anything you or I can do! Luigi
In prepping for tomorrow's Mass, I found this preaching by a Dominican friar. The first two minutes explain this image, which is also found on the back of any dollar bill! http://www.vocationboom.com/fr-peter-hannah-o-p-4/
