A couple of weeks ago, it was Michael Voris - someone threaten to "out" 'him on his past homosexual activity. He went public with his own announcement before the mole could do so. 

Now it's Stephanie Chatfield, the wife of pro-life Michigan politician Lee Chatfield. Someone threatened to "out" her on the abortion she had as a teenager. Following in Voris' footsteps, she went public with her own announcement before the mole could do so.

It certainly has the flavour of extortion. The subtext being that the release of private defamatory information is retaliatory to the person's public actions. Without a demand for something it probably is not legally extortionate, I would characterize it as being of the same species, and as morally constituting defamation.
