In America we lionize, e.g., the people who threw tea into Boston Harbor, or John Brown raiding Harpers Ferry, but that kind of activism has never been the common kind...people want to rebel, but they want to keep their jobs, too. Americans have always had a weird identity as radicals who are absolutely afraid of radicals. Freedom in America is a greater method of conformity than any totalitarian government in other countries, because in America we conform freely.
