Gracian, would you happen to know what the badge on the nuns' upper right arm is? I've seen pictures of these nuns before but never noticed the badge.

Hi!

Im glad you noticed.  I am not sure if its a badge or medal (larger version) and unfortunately, I could no longer remember what it was.  The Nuns sent me some reading materials before Vatican II and I read them long time ago, gosh, I simply forgot!  Sorry.

I will check my files next week, perhaps, someone here knows?

Sorry, dear....

No problem at all! I'm just curious because I've never noticed it before - and I don't think I've seen a badge worn on the sleeve like that either.

She's either an extern or lay sister: they frequently wore slightly shorter habits so as not to hinder their more often manual labour.

I would say the same.  But more likely, she was a lay sister.

It is indeed something different, wearing the medal on the upper sleeve of the habit.  BTW, in McCarthy book, it was mentioned that they wore two medals.  The other one is probably attached to their mantles.
