I thought I was a damnable Americanist Protestant Heretic. Geez Louise, man! At least make up your mind. Quote Anyway, it's been fun and funny, if pointless as usual. You're welcome. Socrates
On 6/8/2016 at 0:14 PM, Pia Jesu said: One of the ironies of this thread is that Socrates uses the fallacious argumentation (ad hominem attacks, appeals to popular belief, emotion and guilt by association) that his screen name philosopher Socrates abhorred! After his trial for corrupting the youth of Athens, Greece, the latter would pay the ultimate price for demonstrating (in public forums) that the powerful and influential Sophists didn't know what they claimed to know. The Greek philosopher, on the other hand, had the humility to say that he knew that he didn't know anything! Socrates (of old) was more interested in ethics and epistemology than metaphysics! It's also ironic that Socrates (of the forum) accuses Era of being an atheist. The Greek philosopher (at his trial) expressed concern that his speculation/views about the nature of the heavens and earth (more specifically, what was beneath the earth) would lead people to think that HE was an atheist! His pursuit of truth--through logical, deeply thought-out debate/lectures never employed personal attacks (though his adversaries felt otherwise!). I might be naive, but isn't there a connection of sorts between forum members and their avatars? What's ironic is that you and the "rationalists" in this thread are using exactly the same ad-hominem, fallacious methods that you accuse me of. Rather than address the actual claims of "fine-tuning" and ID arguments, they've mostly engaged in name-calling, personal attacks and accusations ("heretic," "Americanist," "Protestant," "ignorant," etc.), other ad hominems (attacking the qualifications of some guy who posted a youtube video, but who did not actually formulate the "fine-tuned" arguments), and guilt-by-association (equating belief in a fine-tuned universe or ID with protestant fundamentalism and anti-Catholicism). You're even trying to use my screen-name and avatar to attack me. But if you really want to go that route, I'll just point out that hypocritically trying to impugn the character of those you disagree with doesn't exactly call to mind Jesus Christ. . . . And my referring to Era as an atheist is not an accusation or a slur, but simply an accurate description of his belief system. He does not belief in God (other than as a purely human idea), and he makes no claim to being Catholic, Christian, or to have any other "theistic" faith. If you don't believe me, just ask him.
