The Prop System

I have noticed that it seems often a post seems to be propped just to acknowledge (I think) that one has read it.  I am certainly lately propping posts including to just to acknowledge that I have read it......and projecting???.  I am wondering if we should either desist or have some other means of acknowledging reading a post other than to prop it - including a means to acknowledge that one is praying for prayer requests in that forum other than props.

I used to think of props only for good content with which I agree.  And props build up one's community reputation.   Or am I wrong and the prop system is not confined to the latter and can include the prayer requests as well as acknowledging reading a post.

Your thoughts?

Props are what we make of them.

I use them to acknowledge a response without prolonging the exchange, and to express my agreement, and to show respect to someone with whom I do not agree but whose reasoning or honesty or what-have-you I nonetheless appreciate.

Props are the validation of my goodness and merit as a human being.

Prop me or I'll get depressed.

In all seriousness, I use props to lend agreement and/or appreciation for something, most commonly because it is funny. I also generally prop people that I like.

Because of this, when I was younger I did in fact see props for my posts to be a sign of validation that I was accepted and liked. Given that I was not very popular, this consequently had negative effects on my self-worth. High schoolers are weird. :|

There's research that confirms high schoolers are weird in precisely the way you describe.

Also college students.

And working adults.
