Pio Nono
JMJ 6/19 - Immaculate Heart of Mary The rules for genuflection are rather loose and are a matter for interpretation, but it is generally expected for people to genuflect when they enter and leave the presence of the Blessed Sacrament, as well as when crossing in front of the tabernacle. Liturgical ministers are only to genuflect when entering the sanctuary at the beginning of Mass and leaving the sanctuary at the end of Mass when the Blessed Sacrament is reposed in the sanctuary. Genuflection was a medieval symbol whereby the one genuflecting acknowledged his submission to the will of another - the left knee for the king or lord, the right knee for our God and Lord. Until rather recently, with the absence of kings, it was generally expected for people to genuflect on their left knee upon meeting the local bishop. Hope this helps. Yours, Pio Nono
