Peter's Imperfect Love Was Enough for Jesus

I love Peter, probably the most lovable Apostle. This morning I was reading Luke 22 where Peter betrays Jesus. I got the sense that Peter wasn't trying to deny him so much as buy time. He didn't know what to do, or what to say, so when they ask him, do you know the man, he just wants to buy time and says the only thing he can say. No. But Luke includes the beautiful detail that Jesus turns and looks at Peter, as if to say, Peter, the hour is come, did you think it would last forwver , there is no more time, and I must face the moment of truth, just as you will some day. But Peter always had a hard time understanding that...he was the one who wanted to put Jesus in a tabernacle during the Transfiguration, as if Jesus came to stay, and was not with his face set toward Jerusalem.

We had an afternoon reflection on today's readings. The sister leading the reflection mentioned several interesting points. She noted that Peter covers himself before jumping into the water, perhaps because he is ashamed of wrong he had done (kind of similar to Genesis, in which Adam and Eve cover themselves after eating the fruit). She also mentioned that this Gospel is the second of only two instances in Scripture in which a charcoal fire is mentioned; the first is the account of Peter's denial, in which he warms himself by the fire. So it's quite possible Peter saw those fish cooking on that fire and was instantly reminded of what he had done, only to have Jesus not approach him with retribution or anger, but with love and an invitation to follow Him.

I absolutely love St. Peter. He gives me hope. I am blessed to belong to St. Peter Church.
