Little Sisters of the Poor

Hey Y'all...

I've been reading about the Little Sisters of the Poor...probably because of the court case. They seem like a beautiful community. Has anyone discerned with them? Do you have to be a nurse, or interested in being a nurse, to join them? What kind of care do the sisters do (I see they have employees)? Does anyone know what a "typical" schedule is like?

Thanks...and blessed Easter!

What exactly has been going on with their case? I'm almost afraid to find out. I know why they're in court but is it over yet?

I haven't discerned with them but I did volunteer with them. I don't think all of the sisters are nurses. If there is a home near you I highly suggest visiting. Even if you end up not deciding to discern with them you won't regret visiting!

According to the NPR report I heard, it's all up to Justice Kennedy - as almost all Supreme Court cases have been for the last four or five years. Kennedy asked 'probing questions' that indicated he might support the nuns, and others that indicated that he might not. If he sides with the Liberal Four, then the nuns lose and I have no idea what the next step would be. If Kennedy sides with the Conservative Three, then it's a deadlock, and in cases of deadlock, the lower court rulings stand.

@littlesister this one is for you !

Although it's too large to attach, google the "Becket Fund for Religious Liberty/Little Sisters of the Poor." Just about everything is there.

Although the lsp have somehow become the de facto face of the suit, most of the articles miss that our case is only one of seven that the Supreme Court bundled together to accept.  The Christian Brothers employees insurance carrier (ours) services upwards of 200 religious communities, so we're all in it together.  There are also seven Universities, Catholic and Christian, Priests for Life, EWTN, the Diocese of Pittsburgh, etc., everyone objecting to signing this form that would give our carriers permission to cover contraceptives.  Signing would amount to formal cooperation in evil.

The seventy million dollars in fines would be spread over our 27 U.S. Homes - one hundred dollars per day per insurance-covered employee.

Hope this helps.  Thank you for asking, and pray for us all.

Sister, I know that prayer is the most important thing, but sometimes I wish I could do more for all of you!

Could you kindly share a little bit more about what a day looks like for a Little Sister. I am specifically wondering what you do with the residents, as I am attracted to your community but am not suited to be a nurse (I am afraid of needles). Do all of the sisters beg?

Thank you, and God bless you!

Passerby, just a wonderful description of our day is at the Becket Fund's site under "Who Are the Little Sisters of the Poor?"   It's a graphic and proves once more that a picture is worth a thousand words!

For the other questions : no, we are not all nurses, although a good number are.  Making the elderly happy calls for many abilities.   Also, no, we don't all beg.  Generally, each community has one Little Sister charged with this part of the mission. A few others take turns accompanying her.  Every day on the collecting is a new experience of Providence, and no two are the same.  Sixty percent or more of what we do is supported by donations of funds, food, supplies, and services.  Any one of us could tell you hours worth of stories about that.

Does that answer your questions, at least superficially?  For those who would be interested in a closer look at our life (we won't attempt to sign you up on the first day...promise! ...) take a look at the attached flyer for our "Spring into Service" opportunity for college breaks and vacation times.
