Getting ready for lent?

Didacus

Recommended Posts

Lent is just around the corner and it always comes to mind what to do to get ready for lent.

I am giving much thought to lent this year - got a lot that's been going on the last year.  My wife is doing fine ( we had a scare with her health) but she is holding well in body and keeps good spirit.

I had all my children for Christmas and was off work - which was really great.

So I am wondering what I should do to show my thanks and keep humility before the Lord as lent comes near.

Anyone else getting ready for lent?

During my retreat at New Year, I resolved to work on the virtue of patience, so I'm thinking about penances that will help with that one. I think I will restrict my Internet usage to only essential things (keeping in touch with friends and family who live far away, and work) as I go online as a distraction when I'm getting impatient. I could read or simply pray and be with God instead. I am going to choose some spiritual reading that deals with patience (and mercy as well, as it's the Jubilee Year - any suggestions welcome!).

I've decided on Introduction to the Devout Life by St Francis de Sales for my spiritual reading, along with one of Pope Francis' books on mercy. I gave The Church of Mercy to my dad for Christmas; I may have to steal it for a bit. :P Now I need to choose which Bible book to read, or whether just to meditate on the day's readings.

Vee, I really like those suggestions you've shared from the Holy Father, especially his encouragement to think about how we can enrich others through our own poverty and his reminder that charity comes at a cost. "I distrust a charity that costs nothing and does not hurt" - powerful and frightening words, but they are true and I need to pray about this as I go into Lent.

What is Septuagesima supposed to be for then?

I'm doing hardcore penance this year. I'm excited actually. 40 Days for Life will be going on then so I'm doing as much of that as I can.

I have just discovered that the Anglican Ordinariate observes Septuagesima. This gives a whole new meaning to the parable of the prodigal son and the latecomers to the vineyard, and for once all my sympathy is with the stay-at-home son and the early starters. Hmph.

This is gonna sound incredibly lame, but I am  thinking about giving myself an earlier bedtime (early for me anyway).  I value my late nite quiet time quite a bit, so this is a big sacrifice to me. If I get accustomed to one bed time I can always make it earlier, if I feel is if it's a sacrifice.

Self-Care is gonna be the theme to my Lent, so this ties in with that as well. (You know, that whole body is  a Temple of the Holy Spirit thing?)

I can always do sporadic sacrifices too, like give up meat an extra day here and there, fast an extra day or 2, etc. Anything that won't be over my head
