Tyringham Visitation Photos

While I have "sung the praises" of the Tyringham, Massachusetts Visitation Monastery before...there is a new addition to their Photo Album, titled "Inside the Monastery." The pictures exemplify what St. Francis de Sales writes in his Introduction to the Devout Life, namely, that "as birds have their nests at places to which they retire, and wild animals find safety in their thickets and woods, so our hearts should pick some place each day where they can retire at various times to refresh and renew themselves during their exterior occupations.  Let it be the heart of Christ, his divine wounds or Mt. Calvary, find some place each day to simply gaze at him and rest in him..."  The monastery is truly a House of the Lord!  I love the photos of the two white-veiled sisters in front of the fireplace (#23 of 30)...but can anyone explain what a "tribune" is?

A tribune is an architectural term for a gallery  - in this sense, a balcony or upper floor projecting from an interior wall of a church.

Used, it seems, by elderly or sick sisters who can't get down into the body of the church. Individuals who cannot manage the stairs most likely.

In this house of Brede refers to a 'sick tribune' too :)
