Oik
Hi, I went to confession the other day. I was a great confession. I the priest offered several insights. I received absolution as usual. Then, I went through my usual routine of kneeling in the pew. I began to pray and then it struck me...the priest didn't give me a penance. I said a quick prayer and noticed the long line for confession (and ther usually is at the place I go). I left the church. All day long I agonized about the issue of whether or not my confession was complete. This was supremely significant, since later ion the day my g/f invited me to go to an evening Mass with her. I scrambled to find out abou the confession. I searched Canon Law and the Catechism and couldn't get an answer (or maybe I'm not trained to notice it). Anyways, two questions: Is the confession valid? Did I commit a mortal sin when I received communion? Please let me know. Thanks.
Pio Nono
JMJ 6/18 - Eleventh Friday Oik, Don't worry, your confession was valid and receiving communion was fine. Sometimes, when a priest hears a number of confessions (or is distracted by another issue) he forgets some things - he's human, just like you and I. If you would've tried to re-enter the confessional to ask for a penance, I doubt he would have remembered your confession anyway. If you're confronted with the siutation you just described again, I would just give yourself a penance to perform. Hope this helps. Yours, Pio Nono
