I Need To Ask An Atheist A Question

I had an odd feeling that this post would soon veer into uncharitability...

You started it. None of my original post were uncharitable. Discussing paranormal/spirits/ghost with atheist/agnostics is not something appalling to them as you insinuate. As long as it's not done in a condescending or know it all way. I've had these discussions in real life and it has went fine.

It's not that your question is condescending, but rather that it is not taking into account the persons disbelief and what is interesting according to them. This is why I used the imaginary friends remark, because to atheists God, angels, demons, ghosts, etc are viewed on the same plain as imaginary friends and the tooth fairy.  Now put yourself in their shoes.  If you did not believe in imaginary friends, but someone said they wanted to talk to you about their experiences with them, would you find that conversation interesting or appealing? Most people wouldn't and would dread it.

Nah, I didn't take Josh's remarks that way.

I see your point of view although I don't draw the same conclusion. If I'm an atheist/agnostic on a site dealing with God I'm guessing there is a tiny bit of interest there to see if God exist. I understand this is not the case for all but on the other hand I wouldn't say it's not the case for any. If I'm an atheist/agnostic this would be exactly what I want to talk about if I'm on a site claiming God exist. I would also love to hear about the cosmological constant and laws of nature and how atheist physicist changed their mind on if God exist or not. Again this is what I would want to talk about if I was an atheist or agnostic with curiosity about if God exist. Perhaps a lot of atheist/agnostics want to talk about Church history and teachings and approved miracles. I'm not being sarcastic just saying perhaps that's the case. Or maybe there here to troll or attack believers. And very possibly some are here to just chill. And to your second comment I was wayyyyyyy uncharitable. I have a bad habit of that. My bad.

I was recently in dialogue about Spinoza's philosophy at Catholic Answers, and was banned (for reasons I don't entirely understand). I happened to stumble on this forum soon after, saw that you wanted to ask an atheist a question, made an account, and am happy to dialogue, if you wish. Alternatively, we can share pictures of politicians: http://downtrend.com/wp-content/uploads/2014/08/bscaafl2-620x349.jpg

Well, if you decide change your mind, you're welcome to ask me anything. If not, it took very little effort to make this account, so not using it wouldn't be so terrible.

I hope you stick around either way. Take care.

And you as well. Happy New Year.

I'll keep an eye on this forum for a few days, and maybe contribute some of my thoughts about ways Catholics and atheists can work together in the public square. Points of common interest and the like. I might also set up a discussion about Aquinas and Spinoza.

As long as I'm convinced you are an actual atheist poster and not someone trying to mess with me I will respond. Might not be tonight but within the next day or two. Phatmass can't compare to Catholic Answers and the discussions they get over there. Although this is a cool site with good people. Happy New Year and I hope it's a great one for you and yours.

Josh, it could be more helpful to simply create a testimonials thread. Share your faith experiences and encourage others to do the same. Any non-Catholics and non-Christians would be able to read through at their leisure without feeling uncomfortable or confrontational. I mean, at the end of the day, your story is your story. People can't really argue because it's not meant to be a debate.

Eh I believe him because I've heard plenty of complaints about how quick CA is to ban people who don't meet their status quo. I think it's a neat forum to browse and learn, but too overwhelming to join.

Josh, that's fine. Take your time.

Anyone here is welcome to ask questions if they like. I think I'll start a discussion on Aquinas and Spinoza in the Debates section of the forum in the meantime.

Really? I've been browsing a lot there lately and thinking of joining. Some of the threads I read were really good and they let the discussion flow. One was dealing with Hitler and had tons of pics of him posing with Catholic Clergy that I had never seen before. None of it was edited or taken down. Also they just have so many discussions and sub forums. I really enjoy what I've seen so far. I guess I will have to join and find out how it is. Will always love Phatmass either way.

Josh,

i like and respect you too much to want to get into an argument about paranormal "experiences", if they are real, and what they may mean.  It's still a long way to go to conclude there is a God paying attention to every nano/second of everyone's inner thoughts for all their earthly existence and judging them worthy of worshipping Him for eternity.

Any here who deny all things supernatural/paranormal?

I think that if the supernatural exists, it is beyond the reach of humans.
