New Year's Eve in the Convent

We had a Christmas in the convent thread so what about New Year's celebrations?  Of course its not a big a deal as Christmas but they still might do something.  As for the community Im in contact with I did ask them last year if they did anything special and I cant remember her reply exactly or find it!  If my foggy memory serves me though they dont do much but the Sisters who want to can stay up and  ring the bells at midnight?!

And by ring the bells I think she meant the big outdoor church bells that the whole neighborhood can hear :)

New Year's Eve in the convent was quiet.  We had a holy hour at midnight with Matins - we got up earlier than usual.  We were called to Matins each night at 12:30, but on New Year's Eve it was 11:30.  Nothing too special.

Jesus had his brit milah [circumcision] on Jan. 1.  Isn't that a feast in the Church?

It is for us!

My community have a vigil in the evening and then Divine Liturgy starting at midnight. Which is the coolest way to bring in the new year!

The community I was with had a special holy hour in front of the Blessed Sacrament from 11:30-12:30. It's really something, to be totally silent, adoring Christ when at 12:00 fireworks are exploding from every direction out "in the world." Although the convent is situated in woods and surrounded by a fair size of land, we could plainly hear lots and lots of fireworks.

After the holy hour we would go to the refectory and have some snackies :)

I would rather attend a New Year's midnight Adoration or be a part of a midnight Divine Liturgy, than working (security) the "celebration" events (drunk fests) that I have done in years past!! I would rather have "Sisters" to share it with (no matter the custom) than watch people fall all over themselves or be alone!

Just my 2 cents... Interesting question though! I hope more respond to it!

The ordinary form calendar is Mary Mother of God. The extraordinary calendar is still Circumcision of Christ.

I spent New Year's with the Daughters of St. Paul last year. New Year's Eve is especially important for the Daughters because it is the anniversary of one of the formative spiritual experiences of their founder, Blessed James Alberione. Father Alberione received insight into his vocation and mission while at adoration on New Year's Eve. The sisters have silence on New Year's Eve, and then they have adoration until midnight. They break silence with a festive lunch on New Year's Day. Recreation on New Year's Day includes games and other fun activities. :)

We have our prayer partner gift exchange with our school sisters who spend a few days with us on their way back after Christmas at our provincial house in Hankinson.  We are in bed before 11.

At the Order of the Sacred and Immaculate Hearts of Jesus amf Mary the schedule is the same until 9pm when they have Adoration at 12:00am and have a mid night mass by candle light.

I began my home visit on Dec 28 so was not home at the convent for New Year. I believe a custom within my congregation is a Holy Hour, but I don't know much beyond that. Maybe I'll find out at the end of the year! ;)

New Year's Eve is a day of fasting and retreat for us.
But New Year's day is special with the ceremony in the chapter hall for receiving our patron saint and prayer intention for the year from the Infant Jesus. Than we all head for the community room for a little bit of chatting and of course, a box of chocolate! The rest of the day is rather quiet. We have dinner and supper in the community and talk at those meals.

And best of all is the Liturgy throughout the day! Of course, we still keep our hours of adoration and rosary.

This isn't a religious community but my parish has Adoration to bring in the new year :) that's the best way imo! I'm not able to go because I'm in another city but I love the idea!
