If you doubt the authenticity of the Holy Shroud, and you have every right to do so, keep in mind that Carbon 14 dating is not infallible.  When scientists carbon test other objects, and get a result that is not expected, they always repeat the test to make sure.  The Shroud did not get the benefit of the standard scientific discipline.

The carbon dating of 1988 is definitely questionable and subject to scrutiny. Only one sample from the shroud was taken (whereas the protocol usually involves a few samples total) -- from a rewoven area -- as the shroud had been involved in a fire. They also chose a corner part of the shroud that was handled numerous times when put on display over centuries. As you say, people don't have to believe the shroud is authentic, but if they're going to test it, they should at least do it right.
