PhuturePriest
Why is Grandma Got Run Over by a Reindeer our measurement of determining acceptability? Talk about the lowest bar we could possibly come up with. Literally anything is better than that terrible song. "Well, listening to Frank Sinatra scratch his nails on a chalkboard as he scraps a pan with a rusted fork is pretty awful, but at least it's better than Grandma Got Run Over by a Reindeer!" See? I'm just not understanding why we keep coming back to it as our standard of awful by which we compare other songs. We may as well throw in Rudolph the Red Nosed Reindeer while we're at it, which is quite possibly just as terrible. The only reason I brought up Grandma Got Run Over by a Reindeer is that it has been a vicious "earworm" for me lately, and I am trying to get rid of it. Also, it apparently was the most listened to Christmas-related song a few years back, which was scary. But, you're right, it's a VERY low bar for comparison! Amppax
Listen, saying Pentatonix made this song sound good doesn't mean it's a good song. They could make anything sound good. Theology aside, I can't stand it.
Cam42
The theology of this song is terrible. It denies the Immaculate Conception and the impeccability of Mary. Mary had a special relationship with God precisely because she was the Theotokos. As Catholics, we have a plethora of Marian Hymns which are theologically correct and constructed much better, musically.

Nihil Obstat
Beautiful chanted magnificat at Mass today. Then the recessional was The Angel Gabriel From Heaven Came. That one was stuck in my head all week, so it was nice to hear it sung. Excellent Marian hymns.
Starets
Gabriel's Message is indeed beautiful. I like Sting's version of it., Hauntingly beautiful

There are songs that others love that I don't like at all. Note to Hopeful Heart: I tried to quote your post, too, but for whatever reason, the multiquote function didn't work for me. 4LoveofJMJ
Ok as a person who loves to listen to this song, I have a few things to say about that article. Why does everyone take the questions in that song as literal instead of rhetorical? I don't take this song as a showing that Mary was an idiot or completely blind to what raising the Child Jesus would mean. I think it's more aimed at trying to get us to grasp how extraordinary her life was. Yes she knew what she was getting into when the angel told her that she was to be the mother of God but it's hard sometimes to grasp the simple motions of a mother kissing her newborn son as something greater than it appears to be. As to the lyrics about the miracles Jesus would perform, it's true that she did not know exactly what he was going to do but as it is said multiple times in the bible, she kept these things in her heart and reflected upon them. Instead of trying to condemn this song as a whole, why not try using it as a tool to help people better understand the life of Mary? Is that so difficult? Obviously the author found a way to do it even if it was to criticise. Instead of telling people outright not to listen to it, let them hear the song then explain the meaning behind it. Stop being so touchy about everything! Edited December 20, 2015 by 4LoveofJMJ

I certainly don't expect others to share my dislike for the song as a musical piece. Different notes for different folks.

Echoing what HH said above, I'd also like to add an apology. I feel like my post maybe came off a bit confrontationally, that wasn't my intention. Also, thanks for pointing me to the Pentatonix's Christmas music.

PhuturePriest
Who cares about Pentatonix? Petter Hollens made a cover of the song, and he's quite possibly the best vocalist the world has ever seen.

I enjoy harmony, which is why I like Pentatonix's version of the song. But, I, too like Peter Hollens' voice, so I expect I will like his cover of the song. You probably know this, but Peter Hollens made a video with Avi Kaplan (the bass singer from Pentatonix) of the Song "Black is the Color of my True Love's Hair." It's lovely, and shows the beauty of both their voices. Here's a link in case you've never seen it. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3dXKxmLUl54
