Seven77
I know that there had been other threads on here before about this but I thought we could use another one to discuss the O Antiphons, messianic titles for Jesus, as a way of doing a little bit of an last-minute Advent preparation for Christmas. Right about now I feel like I haven't entered into Advent very deeply… anybody else feel this way? Here is a talk about the Antiphons that I heard recently… I'm going to listen to it again: http://www.instituteofcatholicculture.org/root-of-jesse-a-study-of-the-o-antiphons-with-compline/
Maximilianus
I typically observe it a a mini Lent, but this year I slipped. I love the O Antiphons, signals the home stretch to Christmas. O Sapientia, quae ex ore Altissimi prodidisti, attingens a fine usque ad finem, fortiter suaviter disponensque omnia: veni ad docendum nos viam prudentiae. O Wisdom, who came from the mouth of the Most High, reaching from end to end and ordering all things mightily and sweetly: come, and teach us the way of prudence. I'm watching this right now. Hello, from Australia!
vee
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xk_QXFuIWYE O Adonai, et Dux domus Israel, qui Moysi in igne flammae rubi apparuisti, et ei in Sina legem dedisti: veni ad redimendum nos in brachio extento. O Adonai, and leader of the House of Israel, who appeared to Moses in the fire of the burning bush and gave him the law on Sinai: Come and redeem us with an outstretched arm. Seven77
O Wisdom: I think about the order of the universe and how everything in creation points to an intelligence. All of creation shouts, “we were created by God.” Within God there is order and reason––the Word in Greek is Logos, from which we get “logic.” The Wisdom who orders all things, all of creation, comes to dwell within creation… when he comes, may he bring order into our lives, and into the chaos and void. O Adonai:O Lord… the lawgiver on Mount Sinai before whom all the people fell on their faces in fear and trembling, the God of the pillar of cloud, and pillar of fire, of lightning and smoke comes as a child… how can we be afraid of a little baby? We can only love a little baby. And then, I think of the time when Jesus wrote on the ground when those who wanted to trap him accused the woman caught in adultery… he's the one who wrote the Commandments in stone with his finger. May he help us live a morally upright life, to observe the commandments, and to do his will out of love, not out of fear.
vee
O Radix Jesse O Radix Jesse, qui stas in signum populorum, super quem continebunt reges os suum, quem Gentes deprecabuntur: veni ad liberandum nos, jam noli tardare. O Root of Jesse, standing as a sign among the peoples; before you kings will shut their mouths, to you the nations will make their prayer: Come and deliver us, and delay no longer. vee
O Clavis David O Clavis David, et sceptrum domus Israel; qui aperis, et nemo claudit; claudis, et nemo aperit: veni, et educ vinctum de domo carceris, sedentem in tenebris, et umbra mortis. O Key of David and sceptre of the House of Israel; you open and no one can shut; you shut and no one can open: Come and lead the prisoners from the prison house, those who dwell in darkness and the shadow of death. vee
O Oriens O Oriens, splendor lucis aeternae, et sol justitiae: veni, et illumina sedentes in tenebris, et umbra mortis. O Morning Star, splendour of light eternal and sun of righteousness: Come and enlighten those who dwell in darkness and the shadow of death. from wikipedia (Note: A literal translation of the Latin yields "O Rising Sun", but the poetic "O Morning Star" or "O Dayspring" is often preferred.) This reminds me of Japan which is the land of the rising sun, or the land from which the sun rises.
vee
O Rex Gentium O Rex Gentium, et desideratus earum, lapisque angularis, qui facis utraque unum: veni, et salva hominem, quem de limo formasti. O King of the nations, and their desire, the cornerstone making both one: Come and save the human race, which you fashioned from clay.
cappie
Oh, Emmanuel,"God-with-Us," You have touched me;you are God-with-Me. Thank you for these weeks of prayer. In the spirit of the season my waiting, my patience, feels sacred. Refine and purify my heart with the hottest flame of your love. Give me the courage of your prophets and let me do what is right even when others don't understand. Rejoice! Rejoice! Emmanuel Shall come to thee, O Israel!
