Nuns in pantaloons (habits in cold weather)

So, that title was a little odd, but I'm wondering about wearing a habit in freezing cold weather.

Everyone talks about habits being hot, but sure there's the opposite problem as well.

At my college, all of the girls need to wear skirts for most of the day on weekdays. We're in SoCal, so it doesn't really get cold here, but there are still a few days where tights aren't really enough. Most girls wear jeans or sweats under thier skirts (obviously nearly floor length skirts, so you can't see the pantaloons.)

In REALLY cold places, are sisters allowed to wear pantaloons under habits? I don't see why not, but I am wondering.

Personally, I get really cold. I guess that would be a good penance...

I know of some sisters who wear leggings or long underwear beneath their habits in cold weather. They'll also wear knit cardigans or jackets. I know what you mean about it being a penance. I'm the same as you and get cold easily as well! Especially my feet. I have to wear multiple pairs of socks year around!

(It gets changed into pantaloons because of the fiddlers that dust put in ;) There are some other really good ones too.)

Long johns! Though seriously, I've found wearing a skirt in winter warmer than wearing pan.ts.  Some places have a winter habit, which although looks identical, might be a thicker, warmer fabric.

I have a pair of regular black pantaloons and a pair of fleecy legging pantaloons.  I don't wear them every day in winter, just if I'm going to be out for an extended time.  It is allowed by our directives.

What a topic... :)  Maybe I need to write an article about pantaloons on our Fiat?  Ha ha, just kidding.

I must be wearing the wrong skirts!

I forgot that long johns existed! What a great invention.

Come to think of it... I might get a pair to wear now!

I might also just be getting immune to it.  Although, a good pair of warm winter boots while wearing a skirt is essential - usually with wool or boot socks.

I live in Canada where it goes down to below -28 Celsius in the winter and I wear only skirts :) what I do is I wear wooly long skirts with warm leggings (wool or fleece lined) underneath, knee high boots and a coat below the knee. I've never been so warm in jeans!! Especially since jeans are cotton. :) sorry I don't know what Sisters do! But just wanted to share if anyone wants ideas :)

-28C? I dont usually put my ski pantaloons on until it hits -30.  -48C now thats fun :cold:

For me its not really my legs that I worry about, more like feet, hands, and face/head.  Good boots are essential!

I can't even fathom.

When It's 48 ABOVE zero I wear boots and leggings under my skirt, a sweater, a coat, and a scarf... and I'm still COLD!

Maybe it's because my winter wardrobe is almost entirely cotton skirts and "Spring Weight" sweaters.

Boots make an enormous difference.

They make wooly leggings?

It's becoming increasingly obvious to me that my question stems from a deplorable ignorance of cold weather. :icey:

Cute topic :D But I'm sure the winter weather should much better for the sisters, than the summer, because always easier to protect yourself against the cold in the same habit, than against the hot summer days... :)

MaryLittleFlower, how do you do it ? I live in a hot part of France. Between 30 et 40° Celsius in the summer, and 0°/10°C in winter. I wear a wool's thights (is that the good word ? or pantyhose ?) and a pantaloon (not a jean - jean are so cold) and boots, and I'm still freezing to death ! Maybe it's because I'm in a wheelchair so I don't move a lot ? And my disability tends to make you sensitive to temperature. My "secret" is to wear a plaid on my knees. Look like a grandmother but I'm don't care. I thought about studying in Canada/Québec for one year, but I'm sure I would never survive the winter !

Jeans are the worst for cold weather! Even with wool tights underneath - been there, done that. Half my family is from the arctic, and what I've picked up from them is loose layers. When clothes are tight, there isn't much room for heat to circulate and stay within the layers. Several baggier layers, even thin ones, keep heat in better and circulate it back towards your body.

(And yes, tights is the right word. At least to Brits! Pantyhose is more like the thin nylon ones.)
