cmotherofpirl
I can think of several books that should be banned
Iacobus
No book should every be banned. I have unflitered internet, people ask me why? My freedom is safe only when I am uniformed and able to see what I want to see. I don't see the bad stuff but in theory I could. But you block that bad stuff using a fliter you kill good stuff as well. As a programmer I don't trust a program to do what I do. Banning books would be limiting freedom of speech and expression. What is connected to that? Religion. What would you do if as a Catholic you were not allowed to openly pratice your faith? Ban books, limit rights, make precndent. Not good. A republic only thrives of freedom of information.

let_go_let_God
And if we started banning more books what would stop other groups of people banning the Bible or the CCC. Thank goodness we live in a country where the freedom of speech and religion are kept. Although it could be kept better.
Mickey's_Girl
Les Miserables was on the list, but since it was taken off in '59 its not prohibited.
Erm? I'm trying to figure out how Les Mis could be bad...I haven't read the whole thing, but I've probably gotten 1/5 through the unabridged version (so, about 300 pages), and everything I've seen is quite pro-Catholic. ?? Is it because Victor Hugo misbehaved? MG
let_go_let_God
Most likely.

crusader1234
As with any work of art pleading for social change, the novel Les Misérables acquired many enemies. Conservatives feared the social impact of the novel, and the Vatican banned it for several years.
http://www.lesmis.com/inspiration/author/aboutnovel.htm
Crusader_4
I actually dont mind the idea of having a list of books that could be theologically dangerous for example in our area the Church advised us not to see the movie "The Order" and i actually wanted to see it but i figured i would be faithful. But i think that it doesnt Hurt the Church to read through and say that books are dangerous.
Mickey's_Girl
Hmm...I went on that list, and there's something kooky, or else the person didn't list enough info. Les Mis didn't come out until 1862 (English translation same year, according to my copy). Now I'm curious. MG
crusader1234
I'm not totally sure, but the consensus is that it was on there. It was revolutionary, and since the Royals were Catholic, it makes sense that they wouldnt want a revolution.

But it wasn't set during the French Revolution...it was after the restoration of the monarchy. Well. It's confusing, but I guess I'll have to find out later. If anyone knows of a more specific source about *why* Les Miserables was on the "banned" list, please PM me. Thanks for looking stuff up, Crusader1234! master_alterserver
but Dante wrote a book that some people may believe in, but was just his opinion
McKenzie
Who read the books to determine if they would be banned or not...? If they are detrimental to the Faith, how did those people not lose Faith?
master_alterserver
i have read the books and have found them interesting but you must read them knowing that the church does not claim that dante´s view is correct
