marigold
I have been away from the monastery for less than a week and I am already SO BORED! I submitted my papers to the various right places in the first 3 days I was here, and now I have basically no times to keep and nowhere to be until it's all done. I have already used up all my yarn for knitting practice. I can only do so much housework for the friends I am staying with. I have booked a parlour with a certain prioress (ahem @Mags) and I was going to go for a walk but it just started raining. Please give me ideas for pastimes! (If anybody suggests prayer I am going to sulk.)

Mags
Am gradually turning into a belligerent adolescent. I love my parents but they are driving me crazy. I got into both origami and making pop-up cards when in my previous place and can be small income maker if where you are going makes them too. IgnatiusofLoyola
What about doing things that you love to do or visit places that you love to visit for one last time? Doesn't have to be big stuff. Not sad, just celebrating good stuff you've been blessed to experience so far.

Especially if you're in someplace like Dublin (read: European city that is the RyanAir hub), why not make a mini-pilgrimage? Perhaps go to Rome for a few days? Pray at the tombs of the saints, and enjoy some cappuccino and gelato!

Exactly why I am not at home! The monastery will be a piece of cake if you persevere through it I love mine but could never live with them now!! Say Hi from me!! (If you haven't already been there! How about card making? I got into both origami and making pop-up cards when in my previous place and can be small income maker if where you are going makes them too. Very good idea! The community do make cards, but so far only the glued-on photo type. I've thought it would be nice to expand the selection... maybe that can be my contribution! I will say hi if I don't get too excited and forget! What about doing things that you love to do or visit places that you love to visit for one last time? Doesn't have to be big stuff. Not sad, just celebrating good stuff you've been blessed to experience so far. Yes, good idea! Maybe a little Memory Lane project? Especially if you're in someplace like Dublin (read: European city that is the RyanAir hub), why not make a mini-pilgrimage? Perhaps go to Rome for a few days? Pray at the tombs of the saints, and enjoy some cappuccino and gelato! My budget pretty much would stretch to cappuccino and gelato down the street from me... The venerating saints idea is a good one, though - I'm going to see who is laid to rest in and around town and maybe do a couple of small pilgrimages on foot. Hmmm... Strictlyinkblot
If you're in London the group Soul Food are pretty good (I know you said no praying but they socialise after their prayer meetings and they have events such as a trip to Canterbury).Say hello to Westminister Cathedral for me. katherineH
I'm a librarian - we host lots of cool programs! Sounds like you are in the UK though - don't know if their libraries host these kinds of events though...
Carmelshrimp
No useful suggestions for the high and dry novice, I fear, but buckets of prayers and good wishes for you as you join your community. Hope it all works out for you and that you let us know when you enter so we can keep you in our prayers. Good luck!

(If anybody suggests prayer I am going to sulk.) My first SD used to say: "Make your home a monastery." By which he meant that I should write up my own horarium and stick with it. If that doesn't work, I'm sure your neighbors would love for you to do housework for them. Or you could write my dissertation for me. Or if you're not up to that, how about doing some transcription work? I've got about 800 pages over here that need cleaning up, and eight interviews still un-transcribed.
