Confirmation Gifts??

Kristen

My Goddaughter and Godson have plenty of rosaries and Bibles. I need to get them a confirmation gift, nothing too expensive, but I want it to be meaningful, not a knick-knack from a religious store. She is 13 years old. He is 11. Any ideas?

You can get them a "serious" religious book. I think for a 13 years old, the "Introduction to the Devout life" by St Francis de Sales is okay, as well as "The story of a soul" by Ste Therese of Lisieux. I don't know for an 11 years old...

Or you can get them a biography of a saint. For a girl, I advise Sainte Joan of Arc ;) and for a boy, Saint Dominique Savio. Perfect for his age !

Or if you don't want to give them a book, you can find an icon or a statue. Some of them are not expensive.

I like Nada's suggestion of getting books.

Maybe you could give them each a prayer journal, with some holy cards and a message from you written inside. Having a private place to write down thoughts about God might be really helpful as they mature spiritually.

I like the idea of a book on their Confirmation Saint. I run the confirmation program at my parish and we often give a YouCat which is a youth Catechism. It helps break down the Catechism on their level.

For my confirmation I received a book of meditations and reflections by St Teresa of Avila but I didnt understand it and wasnt ready for it at the time.  It wasnt until fifteen years later when I was finally ready for it did I find that book again, open it, and was able to digest the insights.  I was confirmed and didnt even know enough about the saints to choose one but the saints choose us.  Long story short books are a good idea, so are prayers, mass intentions and so forth.  Confirmation isnt the end of a journey but merely the start, celebrate that start.

I own a church supply store, and some popular items that the kids seem to like ...

Things they love are tiny saints. These sell out every year at our kids and high school outside sales. When I was at the Seek Conference earlier this year with 10,000 young adults (college age!) they were selling like crazy there too. They are only $5.00, and at Confirmation season this is a favorite gift. I own five of them, and even the teachers love them. We have ours by the register, and every time young adults come in they always get one.

Cathedral Art (a vendor) and Christian Brands (a vendor) have come out with some really amesome expandable bracelets that are fashioned after the Alex & Ani Bracelets that are super, super popular right now with young women at department stores. The only problem with A&A is they are made with "energy" (whatever that means), and so I discourage people from buying them. It looks like miraculous medals on them... but its not. Both the vendors I mentioned (which your local religious book/supply store probably already has terms with) have some really beautiful ones at great prices. You could special order through the store? Personally, I think the ones by Cathedral Art are the best. They retail from $10-15, include the medal which has so many promises and miracles associated with it, and look so much like the poplar name-brand ones but with actual medals and not hocus-pocus ridiculousness. I've had several young women admire them when they come in the store with their parents. I also always get compliments on mine for the young girls I run into.

Also, the benedict bracelets are poplar with young girls and guys, and they are making them in fun, neon colors for the girls. I'm continually selling out of the gold benedict with the seafoam twine. The guys seem to like the black and silver/pewter. They retail from $10-$15.

I received a miraculous medal when I was 16 that I never take off. A miraculous medal, a four-way cross, or a St. Christopher/St. Michael medal is something that many young adults cherish. I have so many young guys come into the store wanting me to give them a new chain for their medal or replace a sports medal they were gifted with by their parents.

I love the idea of a nice crucifix or icon. And, perhaps you could have a Mass said for them?

Congratulations on their confirmations! Many blessings!

I love the prayer journal idea, but then I've always been one for writing and nice stationery. A statue or icon of their confirmation saint would be another good choice, or a piece of meaningful religious jewellery.

Another idea is to pay for an event. Is there any retreat they'd particularly like to go on? Offer to cover their costs.

My kids have a miraculous medal bracelet from Medjugore (sorry if spelled wrong!).  It is a nice gift and it has the medal on it.  I know we have a local Catholic Supply store that carries them.  Or you can do a St.  Benedict medal bracelet.  My son wears them too.   They say the rosary with them also because there are 10 medals on the bracelet.

Eileen, great to see you back here! :) How is Brett doing? Feel free to update us from time to time - I know a lot of people here are praying for him.
