blazeingstar
Anythin with Ted is inspiration porn. I don't think porn is allowed on phatmatmass. Extra Credits History is a lot better. Right away I find the lack of historical perspective disgusting. I'm 3 minutes in and the arrogance of the narrator is alarming. Women weren't completely devalued they had a completely different place. It wasn't great for them but it wasn't all horror. And not only that the age of first child WAS around 14-16 and was a lot better than first motherhood being 25+. (they just published a new study showing that miscarriage rates over 25 are something like 30x that of those under) Society won't acknowlege it today, but parenthood was not meant to start in one's 30's. There's an obvious feminist historical snobbiness in here. I found it pretty disgusting, despite having really cute characters. Shame they wasted such good animation on this liberal junk. Ice_nine
it's slightly interesting speculation on how women lived during a time when not much was written down about women. I mean about 1% of recorded history actually talks about women in anything other than generalities and just about never includes a female perspective (up until maybe a few centuries ago). I don't think they were just sitting around twiddling their thumbs all day. I didn't notice any strong lib-fem undercurrent tho. Nor did I see it as "inspirational" or even sensational in any way. I don't understand your strong reactions it was a pretty boring vid.
veritasluxmea
TED is just know for "inspiration porn." Not all their videos fall under that category (this one didn't) but most do. I can see how this one would be associated with them. I agree with Gabriela, it was made to emphasis the oppression of women in those times by Roman culture. It did have that tone of see how bad it was back then, isn't everything so much better now but there's a lot of truth to that. For some, maybe even most, women it might have been that bad. I doubt it was that way for everyone completely though- Catholic women had equal dignity and the example of Christ towards women, although they were a minority. If the empress's wife could build her own temple she couldn't have been that oppressed. I doubt Michelle Obama could pull that off today.
Basilisa Marie
I mean, it's clearly from a modern perspective and is trying to get people to see how limited the lives of women were in Roman times. Because, spoiler alert, they were. Sure women were valued and stuff, but it's true they often died in child birth, got married young, lacked an identity as an individual in public, and were totally barred from many areas of public life. In many ways women were also not valued.
Gabriela
Obviously I agree with all the historical facts y'all are stating. What bothers me is HOW they communicated them, in this way that judges history with a modern bias. There's evaluation in every face, in every sentence, in every scene. That's how propaganda works, not education. Education delivers the facts and encourages people to make their own evaluations.
Ice_nine
how else are we to judge history? Objectively? You're expecting too much esp from an educational organization. People generally believe their own "thing" to be superior, whether it's their religion, culture, city, or even your own era. It's obviously better than other ones . . . just because. Probably a stretch to call it propaganda. I still remain mostly unmoved
Not The Philosopher
Well, it made me want to read more Horace etc. Alternately the title could have been used for a science fiction novel about four time traveling nuns.
Maggyie
Kind of whiny. Waaaah I'm a rich Roman girl and I can't get a good view of the gladiators dying horrible gory deaths. Equality now.
