The Story of Your Baptism

I was a few months old. It was sometime early in October, but I don't know when. There's probably a picture floating around my dad's garage somewhere in an album but I really don't know. I don't know who my godparents are or who did it. It was at the Newman center where my parents went to college and I was the first baby to be baptized there.

It was done for a just in case situation.  Sue me.

Canon law does not provide for "just in case". Take it up with the Code.

I was baptized in 1977 as an infant in St. Matthews Cathedral, Washington DC. Not sure of the exact date… it was most probably in October  (on the feast of St. Ignatius of Antioch I like to think) although it could have been November. Whatever the case, it was shortly after birth. My parents and my god parents were present. I'm still in contact with my godmother and her children, who I refer to as my godbrother and godsister. A priest named Fr. Fox baptized me. He passed away several years ago. I do have pictures somewhere.

OK, so I was Baptist. I was 9. It was at a small Baptist congregation, in January (the 21st, maybe?). The heater for the baptistry wasn't working, so it was freezing! A friend from school came, and of course my parents and siblings (can't remember if my brother was there, actually) were there. The minister was Bro. Bob Litton. No godparents, because Baptists don't do that. Obviously no Saint name, either, for the same reason. I wore a frilly, itchy light purple dress. I don't know if there are pictures.

On this very night, ten years ago, on this same stretch of road, in the dense fog, just like this, I saw the worse accident I ever seen. There was this sound, like a garbage truck dropped off the Empire State Building. And when they finally pulled the driver's body from the twisted, burning, wreck, I was baptized.
