The Story of Your Baptism

Recommended Posts

I'm teaching 7th grade church school, and something I"m making them do is research their baptism and tell the story  to the class.

I would like to hear about Phatmass baptism stories.

How old were you? Where did it happen? Do you know the date? Who was there? Do you know who the priest was? Who are your godparents, how did your parents know them, do you keep in touch? Were you baptized with the name on your birth certificate or a saints name? Did you wear anything special? Do you have pictures?

Maybe you remember the baptism of a younger brother or sister. If you do, tell me about it.

Maybe you didn't get baptized till you were older and you remember every detail. Tell me about it!

How old were you? - About 12. Got dunked in a big tub of water.

Where did it happen? - http://rodmanstreet.org/

Do you know the date? Nope.

Who was there? My mother. My sister got baptized on the same day.

Do you know who the priest was? What priest? Priests aren't required for baptism!

Who are your godparents, how did your parents know them, do you keep in touch? Nope. No Godparents required.

Were you baptized with the name on your birth certificate or a saints name? Most definitely my own name.

Did you wear anything special? I don't remember exactly - but it was something white as I recall.

Do you have pictures? Nope.

well since you can't baptize yourself, somebody did it to you!

my mother baptized me at home during my first bath as a baby. she did that one "just in case" and kept it secret. then I was baptized "for real" (her words) at church a couple months later.

also, why did your mom ( I assume) decide to have you baptized? Did something happen or was it just she decided it was time?

How old were you ? I must have been 6 month old, not more. My parents are not believers. Still, to please my grandparents on one side of the family (only one - for many reasons, the other side disapproved), they get married at church, and baptized their kids. Until I asked to go to catechism, I never received a religious education.

Where did it happen ? In a church.

Do you know the date ? No idea !

Who was there ? My parents, my brothers and my sister, my godparents, some other family members. Nothing big.

Do you know who the priest was ? Yes. He married my parents, and baptized the family. He was a "liberal" who allowed my parents to receive the Sacraments without formation... Some days after my communion, my mom wanted to call him to tell him that I've received Jesus and was a believer, and she learned that he died one week before. Still sad about it.

Who are your godparents, how did your parents know them, do you keep in touch ? My (ex-)uncle, and a cousin of my father. My uncle divorced my aunt years ago, but he was close to the family in this time. I'm not in touch with my uncle, but with my godmother yes, once by year, for my birthday... I choose a different godmother for my confirmation.

Were you baptized with the name on your birth certificate or a saints name ? With the name on my birth certificate, who is also a saint name.

Did you wear anything special ? A white dress

Do you have pictures ? Yes. Do we need to post it ;) ?

Other story : during years after my "conversion", i was frustrated of the baptism. I wished my parents did not baptize me, because I wanted to be baptized as an adult so badly. Now, I'm happy about it :) And I had a little ceremony for my journey to the church (nothing big, a prayer and a blessing).

How old were you? I was an infant.

Where did it happen? At the church that my parents attended at the time.

Do you know the date? I know the month and year. Not sure about the day.

Who was there? Some family members, maybe some friends of my parents.

Do you know who the priest was? Yes, I know the name of the priest.

Who are your godparents, how did your parents know them, do you keep in touch? My godparents were extended family members. I kept in touch with them during my childhood and most of my teen years, but I've lost contact with them over the past couple of years.

Were you baptized with the name on your birth certificate or a saints name? With the name on my birth certificate, which is the name of a saint.

Did you wear anything special? A white satin-y dress.

Do you have pictures? Yes.

Maybe you remember the baptism of a younger brother or sister. If you do, tell me about it.

Maybe you didn't get baptized till you were older and you remember every detail. Tell me about it!

Age: 24, I think. Maybe 26? I can't remember.

Where: Immanuel Lutheran Church, Jaffa, Israel. That church is run by Scandinavian missionaries to Israel.

Date: It's on my baptismal certificate, which I don't carry in my wallet.

Who was there: A bunch of foreigners living in Israel, and a few Israelis.

Pastor: Not a priest, but a Lutheran, Pastor Jan Mortensen.

Godparents: Baptismal godmother later turned out to be crazy, so I don't consider her my godmother anymore. My real godmother is my confirmation sponsor, Glenda. She is as angelic as her name sounds.

Baptismal name: My name. At confirmation I took "Marie".

Dress: I have no idea. I don't think so. I usually dress pretty formally, so...

Pictures: Someone took pictures. I don't have any of them. I remember someone got a really good one of the water pouring, with all the separate sparkling droplets, you know? It was nice. :)

Siblings: I'm the youngest, and my only elder brother is an unbaptized Buddhist.

Details? Oy. The short version: I didn't actually believe in Jesus, but I really, really wanted to, and I confused that with actually believing, so I got baptized. About 18 months later I realized I didn't really believe, so I left Christianity, as that seemed to me the honest thing to do. Then about three years later I begged God to give me faith, and He did, and here I am.

Praise Jesus! :like2:

well since you can't baptize yourself, somebody did it to you!

I baptized myself. Sike. The pastor of the church. I think he has passed away since then or is retired. I am pretty sure that even a non-Christian can baptize, but I am not 100% sure of that.

my mother baptized me at home during my first bath as a baby. she did that one "just in case" and kept it secret. then I was baptized "for real" (her words) at church a couple months later.

LOL. I was a little worried for a second because this girl I dated briefly a couple years ago told me almost the same exact story. But it was her grandmother that did the secret baptism. I don't know how that works - because a person can only be validly baptized once. I guess you can consider the time you got baptized at church a conditional baptism, in the case that your bathtub baptism was not done properly. But your bathtub baptism was your "real" baptism as long as it was done with the proper formula, I think.

also, why did your mom ( I assume) decide to have you baptized? Did something happen or was it just she decided it was time?

She did not. By that age I was old enough to decide for myself that I wanted to do it, which I did.

Ash Wednesday

I never had the chance to ask my parents about this -- I was born 2 months early so I was in the ICU and almost died. I almost want to side eye my parents a little for not getting me baptised at the hospital when I was in that situation.

But knowing my mother, the eternal optimist, she likely had faith that I would pull through and could have a baptism as a recovered baby at the local parish instead.

My uncle is my godfather, he doesn't even practice and we don't really talk. My aunt is my godmother and not practicing either, but she became like my 2nd mother and we became very close after my mother passed away.

I don't really have pictures, and just had my name as far as I know.

On another note, I'm reminded of the time my husband accidentally shredded his baptismal certificate just before our wedding and my going ballistics.... :twitch:

How old were you? A young adult

Where did it happen? My home parish

Do you know the date? Easter Vigil 2011

Who was there? My immediate family plus my now brother in law (he was just dating my sister at that point), my good friend from college flew out. Plus everyone else at the Easter Vigil

Do you know who the priest was? Yes, my pastor

Who are your godparents, how did your parents know them, do you keep in touch? As an adult Catechumen I chose my own Godparent. It was my friend Amanda

Were you baptized with the name on your birth certificate or a saints name? Saints name

Did you wear anything special? A nice dress with a cardigan

Do you have pictures? Yup

I remember being kinda shaky after being baptized and as I was walking down the wet stone steps from the baptismal font all I could think was "don't trip... don't trip"

For me the two moments that really stood out from that night were when I was being confirmed. That was the first time I was called by my confirmation name and that name has become a part of who I am. I'm hoping that if I end up entering a community I would be able to use that name. Also right after receiving the Eucharist for the first time I had this deep sense of peace. Everything within me was just still.

At the parish I was confirmed in, I watched some people be baptized in one of those permanent fixture baptismal fonts that has a little pond in the floor. The to-be-baptized stand in the pond barefoot and Father draws water from the fountain behind them and pours it over their heads so it runs down their bodies and into the pond. Every time someone got baptized, their face went :shocking: and they sucked in breath really fast and their whole body did one of those rapid shivers, cuz apparently the water was REALLY cold. Rather than happy-crying, all the rest of us couldn't help but laugh.

:P

Also, that parish had a whole series of public stuff for confirmation candidates. I think it was the second or third time they stood me up before the congregation, and they asked me to read something, and I couldn't. (I'm a lector, so me not being able to read something is... something.) The other candidates read the little thing they wrote, and I just stood there mopping the floor with my snot and tears. Afterwards my friend, who was sitting in the back pew, said, "Wait, you were crying? I saw that your face looked really shiny but I figured it was just the spotlights..." I'm glad people didn't notice that I was sobbing like a baby. I have no idea what got into me that day, unless it was the Holy Spirit!

BTW: Good thread idea, @Lilllabettt!

@Gabriela I remember the water being lukewarm, around room temperature. Which was nice, I was kinda prepared for the whole cold water thing.

I think what you are referring to are the scrutinies. I liked those once I got over being nervous!
