Slappo Posted October 7, 2015 Share Posted October 7, 2015 If memory serves there's only been only layperson to ever be elevated to Cardinal, and he was first ordained. Female cardinals would be a novelty and a clear break with Church tradition. There have been several cardinals who did not recieve the sacrament of holy orders, but they had received minor rights or at least first tonsure and were clerics, but not ordained.
