Authorities say Christopher Harper Mercer killed at least nine people at Umpqua Community College in Roseburg before he was killed in an exchange of gunfire with police. One victim remains in critical condition at Mercy Medical Center in Roseburg, according to chief medical officer Dr. Jason Gray. He said his hospital received 10 victims. One student said the shooting began when a bullet flew through a classroom window, hitting her teacher in the head. Kortney Moore, 18, told the Roseburg News-Review that the shooter then burst into the room and ordered students to get on the ground, before asking people to stand up and state their religion. He then began firing. Moore said she was lying on the ground with people who had been shot. Douglas County Sheriff John Hanlin said the initial calls about the shooting came in at 10:38 a.m. He told reporters that the shooter died after engaging in a gunfight with responding officers, either in or near a classroom. May God have mercy on the victim's souls and may they rest in peace. I can only imagine what the murderer's reaction was when he came face to face with Jesus... CatherineM
For those who had the courage to stand up as Christians, and those who will live with the knowledge that they didn't have that courage, the first are dead or seriously wounded in body and the second group will be wounded in spirit. Seems like some of that happened at Columbine.
dominicansoul
I was discussing this with a friend who said she would not have stood up or said anything, not for fear of death, but because why would she listen to a mad man and answer his questions? I wish someone in that room concealed carried so that their response would have saved lives...
NadaTeTurbe
You really need a good training to be able to shoot someone in the midst of a shooting, with so much emotions, fear, and without shooting other people. It could have saved lives, like it could have taken other lives : we will never know. I pray that this man would be able to see the light of Christ one day, and to live a life of penance. We must pray for the conversion of sinners, even the worst of them. May the victims rest in peace.
