Makarioi
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pete_Rose Pete Rose played from 1963 to 1986, and managed from 1984 to 1989. Rose, a switch hitter, is the all-time Major League leader in hits (4,256), games played (3,562), at-bats (14,053), singles (3,215), and outs (10,328).[1] He won three World Series rings, three batting titles, one Most Valuable Player Award, two Gold Gloves, the Rookie of the Year Award, and also made 17 All-Star appearances at an unequaled five different positions (2B, LF, RF, 3B, and 1B). .....then he bet on Baseball and agreed to a lifetime suspension from the game. Time marches on and he wants to be reinstated. He met with the commish and a decision is expected by the end of this year. Do you think he should be reinstated and have a chance at the Hall of Fame? He was a great player and made a huge mistake. Why is this worse than players breaking records while taking performance enhancing drugs?
Maggyie
I understand recently there was a notebook discovered that showed Rose bet while a player. So first he lied and said he never gambled period, then he admitted gambling but still lied for years about the extent of it. Great ball player and his accomplishments speak for themselves, but he hurt the game he was clearly born to play. He also knew it was against the rules and did it anyway. Didacus
As long as it isn't the hockey hall of fame - nihil obstat.
CatherineM
He bet on his own team as a manager. Think of the damage he could have done.
Makarioi
I don't believe that there was hard evidence that he bet on the Reds, just assumptions that he did. I just wonder what the difference is between this and a attaining or breaking a record on your own recognizance vs breaking a record when you're on performance enhancing drugs. CatherineM
Better than betting against them I guess. That was his defence when presented with the evidence. I don't believe that there was hard evidence that he bet on the Reds, just assumptions that he did. I just wonder what the difference is between this and a attaining or breaking a record on your own recognizance vs breaking a record when you're on performance enhancing drugs. I don't think Mark McGuire is gonna be a manager or member of the hall of fame anytime soon.
blazeingstar
The whole betting on his own team is really controversial. Considering gambling is now part of the DSMV or whatever psychologists called it, it may be pathological, and that he bet only on his team's success shows he meant no harm, and probably took risks that he wouldn't of otherwise. But given what just happened with Football, it seems that no one follows rules anymore...so I don't know why they even bother.

Era Might
What baseball needs is a beer summit headed by President Obama, with Pete Rose and the ghost of Bart Giamatti. That'll solve everything. Presence of Joe Biden optional.
