AccountDeleted
Ok, the other thread was about politics, but really, this is more fun. It might not be Australia wide though, only in Melbourne, Victoria. There are two public holidays in Melbourne that are totally devoted to sports. One is Melbourne Cup Day, which we have had forever it seems (as long as I've been here), and that is a whole day off for a horse race that only lasts 2-3 minutes. The newest public holiday here however, is the day before the AFL Grand Final, which is an Aussie Rules football game - sort of important on a par with the US World Series baseball game - but this is one day only. So, now, the day before the Grand Final, which is on a Saturday, is a public holiday for the whole day! This year the holiday is on Friday October 2nd. At my work, we are having a special luncheon get-together on the Thursday, and everyone has to wear their team colours - either hats or scarves or jumpers or whatever they have (and there is a lot of clothing dedicated to the AFL teams). My team is St Kilda because I love their song, 'When the Saints Go Marching In' and I was living in St Kilda when I chose a team and my colours are red and black and white. Melburnians are fanatics about footy, so everyone will be dressed in their team clothing/colours. Then we get the Friday off work to prepare(?) for the fun of the footy Grand Final on Saturday. Makes lots of sense, doesn't it? Only in Oz. And maybe only in Melbourne!
Tab'le De'Bah-Rye
Yeah only in melbourne. In Canberra we are like " meh give a what? " I saw prince harry drive past really slowly in one of our bus interchanges in chaufer driven lamborghini with a bullet proof AWD behind him with tinted windows which obviously had body guards in it, and everyone is like "MEH whatever" LOL. I was like look its prince harry and everyone ignored me. LOL. That's why i love Canberra we don't give a hoot about fame or glory, it is said famous people come here all the time and hardly get noticed. LOL. MEH! Spem in alium
Definitely only in Oz, but not in NSW.... When I was at school we were allowed to watch the Melbourne Cup on TV -- serious highlight! But no public holidays for sport. Seriously, sport is like a religion here!
