crusader1234
Well, original sin is the onnly thing babies really have to be washed of, so I suppose you could say it washes babies of any type of sin you want it to
voiciblanche
Well, here's the part I'm unsure of. What if it's an adult that is converting to Christianity? I think they are still only cleansed of original sin, though. We must go to Confession to be forgiven from mortal sin, and then we have to pay for it in Purgatory. Tony
hmm.. The Creed mentions "Baptism for the forgivness of sins" as a plural.. and doesnt make a notion that its just for Original sin
crusader1234
isnt purgatory mostly paying for venial sins? because you dont get there if you have mortal sins when you die.

justfran
Well it says here:
Q. 627. Are actual sins ever remitted by Baptism? A. Actual sins and all the punishment due to them are remitted by Baptism, if the person baptized be guilty of any. Q. 628. That actual sins may be remitted by baptism, is it necessary to be sorry for them? A. That actual sins may be remitted by baptism it is necessary to be sorry for them, just as we must be when they are remitted by the Sacrament of Penance.
and from here:
By the waters of baptism all sins are remitted, original sin and all personal sins as well as all punishment due to sin. In fact, in those who are reborn there remains nothing that would hinder entrance into the Kingdom of God, neither Adam's sin, nor personal sin nor the consequences of sin, the most serious of which is separation from God.
^ I really hope this person considered mortal sin - because I'm pretty sure I've committed what would be considered a mortal sin (see my post in the Catholic Q and A phorum)
If you've committed a mortal sin and haven't Confessed it, you probably won't get there. But praying a few Hail Marys as a Penance usually won't pay for the sin. The venial sins are purged. The mortal sins have already been forgiven, but they must be paid for.
OwNeD_byGoD
let me cause to clarify and see if were on the same page Baptism is usally seen as cleansing of Original sin because it is mostly performed on babies, however it is said in the CCC that if an adult would be baptised and have sorrow for their sin, they would be forgiven of any sin you cannot get into Heaven with any sin on you, you cannot get into purgatory with mortal sin on you, purgatory is a place for cleansing minor venial sins

crusader1234
Yeah, I was wondering about that. If we apologize, and are absolved, how do we pay?

crusader1234
Justfran, there is no need to be anxious. Go confess, and pray for forgiveness! God is love, and if you repent and confess, you will be forgiven.
