Ash Wednesday
I don't like the design, but I can appreciate the sentiment. Maybe it's because it's at MSG, but it made me think of a basketball backboard.
Makarioi
It's a chair, not a throne. Not a fan, but with Ash Wednesday, I can appreciate the sentiment also. He's a plain and simple kind of Pope
StMichael
What is the sentiment? Certainly not religious. Definitely political.
NadaTeTurbe
The sentiment is to love and honor migrant. Nothing wrong with it. We need more people to do that, considering how much hate they receive. I like the design. Maybe because I'm used to the ideous chair that we used to have for the bishop in our cathedral... dUSt
What is the sentiment? Certainly not religious. Definitely political. When you say "not religious" are you dismissing Franciscan spirituality all together or just in this instance?
Era Might
When you reap your harvest in your field, and have forgotten a sheaf in the field, you shall not go back to get it; it shall be for the sojourner, the fatherless, and the widow; that the LORD your God may bless you in all the work of your hands. When you beat your olive trees, you shall not go over the boughs again; it shall be for the sojourner, the fatherless, and the widow. When you gather the grapes of your vineyard, you shall not glean it afterward; it shall be for the sojourner, the fatherless, and the widow. You shall remember that you were a slave in the land of Egypt; therefore I command you to do this." --Deuteronomy 24:19-22 Then the King will say to those at his right hand, 'Come, O blessed of my Father, inherit the kingdom prepared for you from the foundation of the world; for I was hungry and you gave me food, I was thirsty and you gave me drink, I was a stranger and you welcomed me, I was naked and you clothed me, I was sick and you visited me, I was in prison and you came to me.' Then the righteous will answer him, `Lord, when did we see thee hungry and feed thee, or thirsty and give thee drink? And when did we see thee a stranger and welcome thee, or naked and clothe thee? And when did we see thee sick or in prison and visit thee?' And the King will answer them, `Truly, I say to you, as you did it to one of the least of these my brethren, you did it to me.' --Matthew 25:34-40 Let brotherly love continue. Do not neglect to show hospitality to strangers, for thereby some have entertained angels unawares. Remember those who are in prison, as though in prison with them; and those who are ill-treated, since you also are in the body. --Hebrews 13:1-
SaintOfVirtue
Sometimes humility seems awfully gaudy.
Spem in alium
Not really into the design either, but love the sentiment.
StMichael
When you say "not religious" are you dismissing Franciscan spirituality all together or just in this instance? The message that is being sent is not a religious one. It is indicating a political leaning as are many of the other issues that Pope Francis is speaking to, from climate change to socialism. Lost in all of this is real messaging with what we are faced with from loss of religious freedom, Christians being systematically exterminated in the middle east, etc. As for waves and waves of illegal immigrants, no country can sustain it. With the recent happenings in Europe, we are bearing witness to an invasion which will turn Europe from barely Christian nations to who knows what. If this was 1912 or 1940, illegal immigration would be of no consequence. But with the US's ever growing welfare state, can anyone suggest stealing from the host nation and have that line up with doctrine? Do the countries that illegal immigrants come from allow for the same? Can I enter China, Mexico, etc. and get free healthcare, education, etc. Can I push my burdens onto the citizenry of those nations without consequence? As you are aware, the Roman Catholic faith does not purport collective salvation. I see this position by Pope Francis, as well as many others, very troubling. And I am not alone, as many men of the cloth are extremely concerned and baffled by Pope Francis.
Ash Wednesday
So what's the alternative for the immigrants? Send them back to their homeland so they can starve or be killed?
Selah
I am so happy to hear the Holy Father calling for aid and housing these people. God bless him. I pray the love of Christ shines through all of us. Edited September 8, 2015 by Selah
Ancilla Domini
And yet while the Holy Father is requesting his chair to be made by immigrant workers, no regard is shown for the dozens of immigrant-built churches that were closed down in NYC this past year.
