Dave
If you excommunicate yourself by having or supporting abortion or for any other reason, then you can't receive the sacraments. Well, I understand that no excommunication is incurred anymore for things like divorce and remarriage or joining the Freemasons, but you're still denied the sacraments. What's the difference? Isn't that still being excommunicated in a sense?
Pio Nono
JMJ 6/15 - Eleventh Tuesday Dave, Cases like divorce and remarriage involve mortal sins - one is living in the state of mortal sin (adultery) and can't receive the Eucharist anyway. It is still the case, though, that joining secret societies like the Freemasons incurs automatic excommunication. Hope this helps.
