BeenaBobba
From what I've seen of the Vagina Monologues, it has been several women on reading on stage. You make it sound as if it were a live sex show.
Hi protector, While those on stage might not be engaging in sexual acts, the fact still remains that the play is explicitly sexual in nature. That being said, it could be seen as a "live sex show" of sorts.
I do agree that it is the school's decision to ban whatever they feel does not fit their standards.
Good. We agree on this point. God bless, Jennifer
crusader1234
I dont want to say it doesnt have a place because everything has a place somewhere, whether that places is good or bad. However, I feel bad for the women out there who wrote good plays about problems discussed here that did it in a non-vulgar way and were ignored. BeenaBobba
thats not right. thats crazy. 14? its 18 everywhere.
Unfortunately, Flowery, the age of consent isn't 18 everywhere. I did a little bit of research after Rich posted that to me, and he was quite right to say that the age of consent can vary. Some of the states I read about had the age of consent set at 16, others at 17, and others at 18. (It's kinda messed up, huh? I wouldn't be surprised if it was lowered to 11 in the future, given the way our country is going, morally speaking.) God bless, Jen

voiciblanche
Alright. There seems to be three different arguments in this thread. Argument 1 - This is always wrong. Argument 2 - This is not wrong if presented in a way to inform and help women. Argument 3 - It's not wrong. Censorship is stupid. Now, I mostly agree with 1, and I don't agree with 3 at all. I will listen to 2 if someone explains how it informs and helps, but I haven't seen anyone explain yet.
i dont buy its quote-unquote "helping women"' idea. yeah right. i thnk you can help women in a thousand different ways than this play is doing. we can sugar coat alot of things to find what is clearly inappropiate, as appropiate and make room for it. i see this play as one of them. crusader1234
Actually Jen, the age has been going up. Thats no future guarantee, but it is positive for now anyways.

crusader1234
I change my mind. I'm not pro censorship, but I think this play is vulgar and it uses inappropriate methods for portraying its purpose.
qfnol31
With backing from Planned Parenthood and others, the goal is to have The Vagina Monologues produced at campuses around the nation. crusader1234
The play earned a lot of criticism, however, for its positive portrayal of the statutory rape of a 13 year old girl by a 24 year old woman. At the conclusion of that scene, the 13 year old girl tells the audience that it might have been rape, but "well, I say if it was rape, it was a good rape." If a male playwright depicted the statutory rape of a 13 year old girl by a 24 year old man and then had the girl say that if it was rape, it was a good rape, feminists would never stop grousing about the play (and rightly so), but as is typical among leftist movements, the same rules simply don't apply to feminists. That part of the play reached national attention when a male columnist at Georgetown's student newspaper was fired for writing a column asking if there was such a thing as a "good rape" (in the official explanation of his dismissal, the paper complained the student had attacked "a women's issue on campus.")
Ok, this play just went from vulgar to totally disgusting. How cuold somebody write something like this then try to pass it off as 'exposing domestic abuse'??? Thats like saying 'well... if it was murder, it was good murder'.
