Imagine if a college wanted to show kiddie porn? Of course, that'd be more than just a little wrong! But, what if someone were to say, "I know that's wrong, but is censorship really appropriate?" Some things ought not to be shown at all. Since the colleges in question are Catholic, they're to be held up to a higher standard, morally. The Vagina Monologues might not be considered too risque at a secular college, but the play's considered very wrong in light of Catholic moral theology, and that's why it has no place being shown at Catholic schools. BeenaBobba
I just read, actually, that the play depicts child abuse as well... God bless, Jen
Soldier4Him
Oh boy. I can tell this is going to be an interesting thread. Anywho, I'm a theatre major, and we preformed the monologues at our school this past year. I personally wasn't in them, because I don't feel comfotable with some of the material. But you need to realize what the situation is regarding preforming them. If a school (or anyone) puts it on, there is a huge handbook of rules that they have to follow. And if you charge admission, you can recieve none of the money back, it has to go to a women's crisis center. The whole reason behind the monologues is to help women in the world who have been abused in the past. There is a lot of touchy issues in the monologues, and it's something I'm not comfortable preforming in. But the cause is amazing. Any of you who have posted against it, are you very farmiliar with it, and with Eve Ensler's work to write it, and the research she went through? I say if a college wants to ban the preformance, more power to them. Maybe it is something not appropriate for Catholic schools. But other colleges shouldn't feel burndend. We had a turnout of over 500 people this past year, more than we've had in the past, and raised over $3,000 for our local rape and abuse crisis center. Now tell me, how can that be bad? BeenaBobba
Giving money to help others isn't bad, but the means don't justify the ends. Again, using my example of kiddie porn, imagine someone selling it and later giving the proceeds to charity? Giving money to charity is good, but kiddie porn is not good at all. I also can't help but wonder if at least some of the proceeds fund places that offer contraception and abortion... God bless, Jennifer
crusader1234
Crisis Centres are a lot different from Abortion centres, but I agree, the money might end up there. I, personally, am against the whole banning books thing. I don't think, however, that this is appropriate material for a Catholic, or secular for that matter, school to be taking on as part of the curriculum. There are other plays to perform! BeenaBobba
Vagina Monolgues -consenting adult women -legal Kiddie Porn -exploited children -illegal in 50 states That comparison is ridiculous.
Keep in mind that this play does in fact exploit minors. Last I knew, an adult having sex with a 16-year-old is considered statutory rape. The fact that the adults are consenting in this play doesn't change the fact that it's still immoral, much like pedophilia is immoral. Catholic colleges aren't banning this predominately for legal reasons; they're banning it because it is disgustingly immoral.
