CrossCuT
I enjoy listening to StarTalk among other podcasts while Im at work, but I thought maybe you guys would be interested in this episode on Science and Religion. Tyson has guests Richard Dawkins as the science representative (Evolutionary Biologist and atheist) and a Jesuit priest Rev James Martin as the religious representative. Not sure if this is a sort of grill the priest scenario since there is a prerecorded interview with Dawkins then the show revolves around the priest responding to the questions Dawkins was asked. But I thought since it was a Catholic priest being interviewed that you all might be interested. Maybe, maybe not. Link to Episode to listen to: http://www.startalkradio.net/show/exploring-science-and-religion-with-richard-dawkins/ Also wondering if people have experience with Rev Martin and if he is a good/bad representative etc. He refers to the lack of belief in evolution as ignorance so I dunno if that gives him a strike in the Catholic book or not. BUt this isnt just about evolution, its more about logic and religion on the science fields or how we can understand the world etc etc etc Edited July 28, 2015 by CrossCuT
Guest
Listened to this on Sunday. I enjoyed it. Tyson is dope. A big fan of his. Father is considered sketchy by some especially after his recent remarks on gay marriage. I enjoyed his commentary on Star Talk though.

I actually wondered why they chose to interview a Catholic priest since in general, Catholics dont really have an issue with Evolution or the like. Id imagine if they really wanted answers to such, they would invite people like Ken Ham or other crazies.
Catlick
Listened to this on Sunday. I enjoyed it. Tyson is dope. A big fan of his. Degrasse Tyson is certainly erudite and eloquent when he talks about physics. When he steps outside his field of expertise he turns into a full-blown Communist, including the tiring cliches of evil ignorant clerics persecuting enlightened proto-liberal scientists. Oh, well, of course Blaise Pascal and Isaac Newton and Gregor Mendel and Georges Lemaitres and Roger Bacon where deeply religious men who saw natural science as a religious vocation and actually spent most of their time praying and practicing theology, but hey, just another case of the Zeitgeist imprisoning would-be-liberal-atheists in the dungeon of medievalistic faith. Of course Degrasse Tyson himself is miraculously free from the atheistic Zeitgeist currently ruling... Imagine someone holding forth on biology, writes literary critic Terry Eagleton, whose only knowledge of the subject is the Book of British Birds, and you have a rough idea of what it feels like to read Richard Dawkins on theology. The same goes for that loud-mouthed ignoramus Degrasse Tyson. I actually wondered why they chose to interview a Catholic priest since in general, Catholics dont really have an issue with Evolution or the like. Id imagine if they really wanted answers to such, they would invite people like Ken Ham or other crazies. I actually know knowledgeable Catholics who have informed criticism of evolution, basing themselves not only on science but also on the Doctors of the Church. Their voices are rarely heard because of the general enthusiasm with which contemporary Catholics ride on the wave of 'science'.

Id imagine that if they were a religious scientists, they wouldnt really be able to base an acceptable criticism of the science behind evolution by using Doctors of the Church. Guest
I'm not even sure of half of what you wrote Catlic but I know you don't like black folks so whatever. Btw Tyson is agnostic. Crosscut he wasn't confrontational with the Priest at all. Tyson seemed pretty open to what he had to say. I thought it was a cool talk on God and Science. I hope there's more on Star Talk in the future with Catholics. Edited July 29, 2015 by Guest
